Coalers shutout Herscher in combined perfect game

The Coal City baseball team conquered Herscher 18-0, getting a four-inning combined perfect game from Abram Wills and Brady Best to stay atop the Illinois Central Eight standings.
Wills fanned six through 2.2 innings and Best fanned the other two in the 1.1 innings to finish the game.
The Coalers jumped on Herscher for 11 in the opening frame and added another seven in the next two innings to grab an easy win.

Lady Coalers unable to stave off the Tigers

The Coal City softball team was rallied against Herscher on Monday but in the end it was the Tigers who turned the tide to win it 12-8.
The Lady Coalers, who are currently sixth in the Illinois Central Eight, cut into Herscher’s 5-0 lead with three in the first to make it 5-3.
They followed that with five unanswered runs to grab an 8-5 lead. But Herscher would plate seven in the seventh to grab the win, staying undefeated in conference.

Coalers drain luck of Irish, split doubleheader with Morris

The Coal City baseball team fell 5-2 in game two of a doubleheader against Morris on Saturday.
The Coalers had to deal with some good pitching as they were held hitless and scoreless through the first four innings before Aiden Hansen broke up the no-hitter in the fifth with a grounder right down the first base line.
That led to two runs on wild pitches but unfortunately a strikeout would end their threat as Morris held on to win the shortened game.

Coaler boys tracksters run 14th in Seneca Invite

The Coal City boys track team placed 14th during the 16-team Seneca Invite on Friday.
The Coaler boys scored 16 points while Reed-Custer had 26.5 in 10th place, Wilmington scored two in last and El Paso Gridley led the pack with 151.5 points. The girls didn’t score any team points and defaulted to last.
Christian Micetich placed second in the 300 meter hurdles and sixth in the 110 meter hurdles while Colin Dames placed fifth in the shot put.

Lady Coalers fall in two tough conference matches

The Coal City soccer team came up short in a 4-1 loss to Lisle on Thursday.
Both teams had to adjust to the elements with 35 mph winds gusts which meant angling the ball away from the goal in anticipation that the wind would curve it back to the goal.
That’s what Coaler coach Todd Painter advised at the beginning of the match when his players were warming up. It was either that or put some heat on the ball.

CCHS students take aim at new sport

In one fluid motion Kuhl, who was wearing a CCHS trap team dri fit t-shirt and a pair of blue jeans, shoulders her Browning Over-and-Under 12 gauge shotgun, aims and fires, Miss. Thankfully, it’s just a practice round.

The Coal City softball team knocked off Manteno 5-4 on Monday thanks to some good pitching from Kaitlyn Jasper.
Jasper did everything she needed to do to hold a very good Manteno offense at bay as she gave up on one run on four hits while fanning one and walking four over her four innings of work.

The Coal City baseball team cruised to a 9-1 win over Manteno on Monday, thanks to an excellent performance on the mound by Abram Wills.
Wills was in control, giving up an unearned run on just two hits while fanning 14 batters as he went the distance for the complete game win.
He got a lot of help from his offense and Ashton Harvey, who would put up eight runs in the sixth to take 9-1 lead. Harvey’s big grand slam highlighted a big sixth inning.

The Coal City track team placed first in men’s and third in women’s during the annual quad meet with Wilmington and Reed-Custer on Tuesday.
The Coalers, who hosted, had 64 points to Reed-Custer’s 46 and Wilmington’s 31

Finch plans to learn all he can wrestling at North Central to prepare for Olympics

Two-time all-state wrestler Zach Finch is taking his unorthodox style of wrestling to Naperville as he’s signed a letter of intent to wrestle at North Central College.
Finch, who was a three-time state qualifier for the Coalers, said it was between North Central and several other schools he visited.
