Scandal, gossip, moral degradation — let's set the way back machine to the 1880s. It was the Victorian era, when dime novels flourished, and society was entertained by stories of drama, intrigue, loose women, villains and the heroic character who wins in the end.
Enter the Joliet Weekly Press, a newspaper devoted to bringing all of the above to the readers of Will County. And of course, there was no better place to find all of those things than in the Penitentiary. In 1883 they ran a series of articles which is our focus today.
