The storm that swept through much of the Midwest on Monday afternoon wasn’t your typical summer thunderstorm.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the type of storm that produced this week’s fast-moving line of high speed winds, rain, thunder, lightning and hail is called a derecho. Monday’s storm caused extensive damage and power outages across the region.
The storm was long-lived, tracking from Omaha, across Iowa and northern Illinois, and into northern Indiana before it ran out of steam.
