The Will County Board approved a new 4-cent per gallon tax on gasoline in December, and that increase could hit gas pumps as early as next month.
In June, the General Assembly approved Senate Bill 1939 (with House amendment 2), which amends the County Motor Fuel Tax law. The amendment granted Will and Lake counties the statutory authority to impose a tax of at least 4 cents but not more than 8 cents on all gas and diesel fuel sold at retail in the county. The original 1989 law gave DuPage, Kane and McHenry counties the authority to tax motor fuel.
