Early morning crash results in fatal injury

A Sauk Village woman was killed in a crash on North (New) River Road last Thursday morning.

According to the Wilmington Police Department, emergency responders were called to the scene of a collision located about one mile southeast of Boathouse Road  at 6 a.m. Two vehicles were involved, and both sustained heavy damage that appeared to have resulted from a head-on crash.

Members of the Wilmington Emergency Services and Disaster Agency and Elwood Police Department helped divert traffic from the heavily travelled section of roadway while officers investigated.

Witnesses stated that one of the drivers was traveling westbound while passing a semi tractor-trailer combination on a curve, in a no-passing zone, when the passenger vehicle collided with the second vehicle, which had been traveling eastbound.

The first vehicle was occupied by a driver and a passenger, both of whom were transported by the Wilmington Fire Protection District to AMITA Health Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, where the passenger Annette Reed, 57, of Sauk Village, was pronounced dead.

The driver of the second vehicle was also taken to AMITA with serious injuries.

Due to the severity of the collision and resulting injuries, Wilmington Police requested assistance from the Illinois State Police, who are in the process of reconstructing the accident. Results of that investigation will identify and confirm fault for the collision and appropriate action will be taken at that time.
