July brought much needed rain to Grundy
After a couple of dry months, the skies opened up over Grundy County and dropped 6.31 inches of rain in the month of July. One particular storm brought high winds and tornados.
The storm system that blew in on the evening of July 28 downed trees and power lines in many areas of the county and a tornado struck the Grundy County portion of Minooka with 85 mph winds that crossed into Channahon and 95 mph winds were recorded on the Kendall County side of the village. The National Weather Service has classified the tornados as EF-0 and EF-1, respectively.
Grundy County’s peak wind gust was recorded that evening at 50 mph in Morris.
The Grundy County Emergency Management Agency [GCEMA] reports the highest 24-hour precipitation amount was recorded at 1.10 inches on July 13, one of 12 days with measurable rain last month.
The July rains bring total liquid precipitation for the year to 20.36 inches, over 2 inches shy of where the county was last year.
The average July temperature was 74.1 degrees with a low of 56.9 degrees and a high of 96.8 degrees. There were six days in the month when temps exceeded 90 degrees.
