Terry Smith

DIAMOND—Terry E. Smith, 70, of Diamond, IL, passed away Sunday, Sept. 17, 2017 at Morris Hospital.
Terry was born March 28, 1947 in Carbondale, IL to Thomas E. and Lillian E. (Gensler) Smith.  As a young adult, he was an excellent hockey and softball player. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing earlier in his life. He honorably served his country as a 3rd Class Petty Officer in the United States Navy serving as a Hospital Corpsman. He was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal with one bronze star. He married Kathleen A. Cassani on Aug. 26, 1972 at St. Patrick's Church in Joliet.
Terry was a Teamster, beginning his career with R.P. Donahue Stone Quarry where his father served as vice president. He then worked for Illinois Wine and Spirits Distributors and Old Rose Distilling Company until his retirement. After retirement, he became an avid golfer. His children and grandchildren were the true joys in his life.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Kathleen; his daughter, Lori A. (Mike) Amarant, of Vacaville, CA; his sons, Greg J. (Daphne) Cassani, of Yulee, FL and Timothy E. Smith, of Diamond; his grandchildren: Morgan, Cameron, Maverick, Kylan and a new grandchild on the way; great-grandchildren, Kayzlea and Carsten; his brother-in-law, John Palmer and his nieces, Kimberly and Cindy Palmer, of Springhill, TN.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Judy Palmer and his grandson, Kyle Cassani.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Terry's name may be directed to the Wounded Warrior Project.
Cremation rites have been accorded.
A funeral service and full military honors will be held privately at a later date at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.
