Petitions circulating for local elections

Representatives for municipal, township, library, school, park and fire districts began circulating nominating petitions on Tuesday for the consolidated election in April 2021.
Candidates have until mid-December to collect the signatures necessary to get their names on the ballot. The number of signatures obtained from registered voters within the district, community or township they are seeking to represent is based on the number of votes cast in the prior consolidated election.

Park district plans shelved, for now

A group of community minded citizens in the Coal City area put forth the idea of establishing a park district centered around a community center.
It’s been around a year since the idea was first presented to the public, but with the on-going pandemic and the recent announcement of Exelon Generation’s plan to retire the Dresden Generating Station, the future of a park district is in question.
Voter approval for the establishing a park district and a board of commissioners was slated to go before then community in April 2021.

Drive-up food distribution Saturday in Coal City

The Coal City Food Pantry is teaming up with the village of Coal City to host a drive-up food distribution on Saturday, June 6.
Food boxes have become available from the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program through the Northern Illinois Food Bank. The food is free and will be distributed to the first 250 families who drive through the distribution site. Distribution boxes will contain fresh produce and dairy products.

The final month of construction

After one year and three months the village of Coal City has entered the final month of construction for South Broadway street.
The reconstruction project began in March 2019 with the removal of landscape features. As the project progressed there was the installation and relocation of natural gas lines, municipal infrastructure improvements, removal and replacement of roadway and sidewalks. Lately, the decorative aspects of the street have been added including new light fixtures, paved walkways and trees.

Winter storm advisory in effect Thursday night

The calendar may read mid-April, but we’re not out of the woods yet when it comes to a visit from Old Man Winter.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter weather advisory for the area, with another late season round of accumulating snow expected Thursday night into early Friday.

The advisory goes into effect at 11 p.m. on April 16, and includes Will and Grundy Counties.

Coal City awarded $92,000 for tornado recovery

As the village of Coal City inches closer to the five-year anniversary of the June 2015 tornado, a bit of financial assistance has finally come through thanks to the persistence of a local legislator.
It was announced just before the new year that the village was in receipt of $92,092 in Federal Highway Authority funds, dollars earmarked to help the village with its tornado recovery costs.

New name, new location same family fun

There will be no Octoberfest in the village of Coal City this fall, but the fun of the festival will continue in a new location under a new name.
After 33 years of hosting the fall festival in downtown Coal City, the GFWC-IL Coal City Junior Woman’s Club is moving the annual event to Carbon Hill Park. Organizers say the foundations of the event will continue with some new and exciting additions to the one-day festival set for Saturday, Oct. 5.

Unit 1 Board finalizes end of year calendar

Don’t worry students, summer break is less than two months away now that an official last day of school has been set.
At its meeting last week, the Unit 1 Board of Education announced that Friday, May 31, will be the last day of school for students. Teachers and staff will report the following  Monday, June 3, for a teacher institute day.

Coal City to implement communication system

Implementation of a community alert system was identified as a short-term goal in the village of Coal City's strategic plan, a goal the mayor says can now be scratched off the list.
“For the past couple of years, the village has been reviewing the possibility of utilizing a communications platform that would allow the village to contact a subset of village residents dependent upon the type of emergency that must be communicated,” said Matt Fritz, the town's administrator.

Legislation seeks $2.6 million for tornado recovery

For nearly four years Coal City officials have been knocking on the doors of state lawmakers reminding them of the financial hardship a powerful tornado created when it torethrough the villae June 22, 2015.
At the time, state officials did not seek disaster relief funding from the federal government.  
Illinois State Rep. David Welter (R-Morris) heard the town’s call and last week filed legislation seeking $2.6 million to cover debt related to the town's cleanup and recovery efforts.
