Coalers play Monday for a shot at state

The Coal City boys baseball team is one victory away from playing in the Class 3A state finals with Saturday's sectional victory over Joliet Catholic.

The Coalers (34-5) will battle St. Ignatius Chicago (15-9) at 5 p.m. Monday at Standard Bank Stadium in the Crestwood Super Sectional for a shot at playing at Route 66 Stadium in Joliet starting Friday.

Coal City sets street improvement plans

   The village of Coal City is planning $195,000 in street improvements this year and a large portion will be covered by state Motor Fuel Tax funds.
    Sections of nine streets are scheduled to be improved, as well as a portion of an alley and the intersection of North Street and Fifth Avenue.
    Village engineer Ryan Hansen said the intersection widening will help trucks and cars better navigate the turn.

An expanded place to play

     Since the day it opened, the Hope Helps all-inclusive playground has been filled with individuals of all ages and abilities, and it’s about to get busier.
    Hope Helps founder Brittney Kaluzny presented  the Coal City Village Board with some exciting news last week.
    “We are ready to expand (the playground) if you are willing to accept it,” she said.

Coal City backs away from parking plan

    The yellow tape was pulled up, parking blocks loaded on a trailer and the signs designating the parkways between Park and Chestnut streets for reverse angle parking were hauled away Tuesday morning.
    Reverse angle parking is gone and it won’t be making a return as the Coal City Village Board approved a South Broadway reconstruction plan that includes traditional head-in angle parking.
    “Common sense prevails,” was the response a Coal City Courant reader posted on a social media post announcing the board’s decision.

Payton to attend Boys State

    Wills Payton has been selected to represent Coal City High School and Coal City American Legion Post 796 at the 83rd annual session of Illinois Premier Boys State, June 9 to 15, at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.
    American Legion Illinois Premier Boys State is a unique program for outstanding high school juniors that focuses on participation and personal experience in a model state. It is among the most respected and selective educational programs of government instruction.

Making Coal City green again

In honor of Arbor Day, 170 volunteers, the majority  of them ComEd and Exelon Generation employees, headed to Coal City to continue the revitalization of the village’s green spaces.
It was the second time in three years volunteers came to plant trees. The goal was to begin restoring the tree canopy destroyed in the June 2015 tornado. The powerful EF-3 twister took down an estimated 50,000 trees as it passed through the village.
The Arbor Day planting was organized by the village, ComEd, Trees Forever, iTrees and Spring Grove Nursery.

As the village of Coal City prepares plans for a $5.4 million makeover of South Broadway town officials wanted feedback from residents and they got it, although not as much as they were hoping for.
    Out of the town’s 5,600 or so residents, 6.4 percent took the time to complete the 11-question survey. Of the respondents, 245 utilized an online form (10 of the respondents did not live within the village limits) and 123 responded to a direct mailer sent by the village to 600 homes.

Coal City, county agree to long-term animal control

     The village of Coal City and Grundy County have entered into a long-term contract for animal control services.
    Village trustees have given approval to an extension of the service agreement the parties entered into three years ago. The terms have not changed, however the village will pay a bit more for services.
    Additionally, the county presented the village with an  open ended contract and since the deal is scheduled to go on until one of the parties pulls out, the village has asked that a slight amendment be made.

Broom bigger as Coalers get conference sweep

    Payton Hutchings aided the Coalers in shutting out the Panthers as he hurled a no-hitter during their 3-0 conference win on Friday.  
    Hutchings went the full seven innings giving up no hits and striking out 16 batters while walking just two.
    Hutchings also led the offense going 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI. Sean Micetich also added a double and an RBI.

Lady Coaler kickers give two conference teams the boot

    The Coal City varsity girls soccer team bounced back in conference action, as they defeated Westmont on Saturday, 5-1.
    The Lady Coalers took full advantage of Westmont not having a full side. Coal City played an 11 vs. 10 match down, and secured the win thanks to a four-goal game from Bridget Kauzlaric.
    Junior Lauren Phillips also tacked on one goal.
    Miranda Ramirez secured two saves, while Helen Onsen picked up five saves.
    “A full Westmont team would have made this a very evenly matched game,” said Lady Coaler coach Todd Painter.
