Lady Coalers continue winning ways, earn second at Lemont Invite

    The Coal City girls tennis team added another notch to their win column Monday night, as they defeated St. Bede, 4-1.
    Winning matches on the night were No. 1 single Kiara Abbott, No. 2 singles Natalie Schoeneck, No. 1 doubles Sarah Moore and Leslie Youskevtch, and No. 2 doubles Jessie Hanley and Abby Gernenz.
    The win marks the team’s fifth in a row, and improves their overall record to 12-4. They play Romeoville and Joliet later in the week.

The battle between I-8 titans

    It’s week five and with it comes one of the most anticipated games of the football season, Coal City traveling to Herscher.
    Both teams will be entering Friday night as undefeated powerhouses in their own right, but only one will be able to leave with bragging rights.
    According to the IHSA’s playoff outlook, Herscher is ranked first in Class 4A, while Coal City follows in fourth.

    The Coal City varsity boys soccer team is on a roll, earning second in the Ottawa Invitational on Saturday.
    Coal City wound up going 2-1 on the day, picking up wins over Sandwich and Kirkland Kiawatha, extending their overall record to 11-3-1.
    In the first game, the Coalers defeated Sandwich 4-0. Goals came from Nolan O’Keefe, Ben Hawkins, Austin Planeta and Alex Friddle.
    Unfortunately, Coal City ran out of gas in the second game of the day, playing a back-to-back against the host team, Ottawa.

    The Coal City varsity volleyball team split two conference matches this past week, putting them at 3-1 in the Interstate Eight so far.
    Last Tuesday, the Lady Coalers picked up a win over Reed-Custer, defeating them 25-16, 26-19.
    Coal City (7-9 overall) was led by Brooke Chapman, who set another great match with 15 assists for 54 attempts with no errors. She also had one solo block and six digs.
    Katelyn Sisk was the kill leader with eight of her 14 attempts hitting the court. Sisk also added one ace and one solo block.

Manteno coming in with the tide

    Coal City may have ran over the Bulldogs Friday, however they’ll face a tougher foe this week  when they host Manteno.
    The Panthers will be the Coalers’ strongest test to date, and while the visitors suffered a loss in week one, they’ve proven themselves ever since.
    Statistically speaking, the Coalers haven’t faired well against Manteno during the regular season. In fact, Coal City has lost to the Panthers in the regular season for the past four years.

Coaler kickers extend winning streak

    The Coal City varsity boys soccer team had a stellar showing this past week, picking up three wins, including two in the conference.
    “We have been playing really well, and I feel like we are getting better each game,” said coach Steven McCleary. “We have a tough schedule coming up in a couple of weeks, and we will see where we will fit in. Hopefully we are right where we want to be.”
    On Monday, the Coalers (8-2-1) defeated Wilmington with a shutout victory, 8-0.

Coaler golfers play well at home

    The Coal City varsity golf team picked up another conference win on Thursday, defeating Wilmington at Cinder Ridge, 183-204.
    Matt Misewicz and Russell Gomien continued to play well at their home course, both finishing six over par with 42s.
    Ben Sorensen earned a 49 on the day, while Miranda Rhoder capped the top four with a 50.
    Cam Lander and Beau Wills also competed favorably, finishing with 55 and 56, respectively.

Coalers hit the road Friday

    The Coal City varsity football team is gaining steam after two wins in their opening weeks of the football season. The Coalers now prepare for divisional play, as they hit the road for the first time of the year against Streator.
    Coal City dominated the Bulldogs a year ago, 31-0, and will be looking for history to repeat itself on Friday.

Lady Coalers claim first at invite

    The Coal City girls tennis team swept the competition this past Saturday, as they held their annual Coal City Invitational.
    The Lady Coalers entered the contest with an overall record of 2-2, but finished the day 5-2 with team wins over Mendota, Princeton and East Aurora.
    The wins put an end to Princeton’s 12-year winning streak, as Coal City claimed the first place trophy.
