K&W Bakery coming to Wilmington

    The aprons hanging on the wall are a tell-tale sign that a new business will soon open.
    K&W Bakery, based in Coal City, has signed a lease for 111 S. Main St., in the Mar Theater building.
    Co-owners Wayne Mahler and Karen Johnstone haven’t set an opening date yet, but are shooting for November. Johnstone said they’re still ordering equipment so the opening date will be determined by its delivery and some other commitments.

Former Wildcat standout takes up martial arts

    While football and wrestling are both physically demanding sports, one Wilmington native has taken it a step further by fighting in the octagon.
    Nick Hawkins, a name that rings clear with Wildcat fans, has taken up mixed martial arts. And it may be his sport of choice even after earning a state championship in high school football in 2014 and winning two thirds and a second place state wrestling medal.

Wildcats will host Sandwich for senior night

    There’s no place like home, especially for the Wildcats where they come charging out of the woods as part of the pregame. They’ll make that appearance Friday when Wilmington hosts Sandwich during senior night.
    With the Wildcats finishing the I-8 Small Division this past week with an undefeated record, they’ll carry their momentum into these final two weeks before heading into playoffs.

MATTEO LOMBARDI races for the end zone while being chased by Comets Friday night during one of his four touchdowns scored to help defeat Reed-Custer 54-21. The Wildcats never trailed as they racked up 515 yards of total offense while Reed-Custer gained a respectable 347 yards. But the difference came down to fumbles on a slippery field as the Comets turned the ball over five times to Wilmington. The victory impoves Wilmington to 6-1 while the Comets lose any chance to make the playoffs with a 2-5 record. Wilmington will host Sandwich Friday while Reed-Custer travels to Plano.

Woodall, Long heading to Sectional

    The Wilmington golf team headed to Nettle Creek Golf Course in Seneca  Tuesday night to compete in the Regional with 12 other teams, including Reed-Custer, Seneca  and Streator.
    The Wildcats wound up taking fifth as a team with a score total of 371.
    Tyler Long, who shot an 89, and Ryan Woodall (90), both qualified for Sectional, as they placed eighth and ninth as individuals.
    Only the top 10 individuals after the team placements were accepted for Sectional.

Wildcats to defend ACE Trophy, finish I-8 Small play undefeated

    Wilmington won the I-8 Small conference title Friday but they aren’t done yet. Next up is winning the ACE trophy which they’ll play for Friday when they travel to Braidwood.
    Reed-Custer has more than the ACE trophy to play for as making the playoffs hangs in the balance. Of course, Comet coach Mark Wolf would like to hoist the Ace Trophy for the first time in his three seasons with the Comets, something that the Wildcats have claimed for nine years straight.

Wildcats drop Survivors Cup, prepare for Regional on Friday

    The Wilmington varsity boys soccer team dropped three matches last week to Reed-Custer, Grant Park and Plano.
    The Wildcats took on the Comets last Tuesday, as they competed in their annual Survivors Cup series, with the winner earning the traveling trophy.
    Wilmington has had Reed-Custer’s number the past few years, winning the trophy three years in a row since the creation of the Survivors Cup.
    Unfortunately, the Comets were able to take this year’s  trophy with an 8-0 shutout over Wilmington.

Lady ‘Cats fall to Coal City

    The Wilmington varsity volleyball team traveled to Coal City Tuesday to compete in a conference match with the Lady Coalers.
    The Lady ‘Cats were unable to come away with a win though, as they fell in two games, 25-13, 25-19.
    Abby Holmes led the Wilmington with five kills, while Carley Wilkerson finished with four.
    Wilkerson and Abby Chamberlin chipped in with six assists each.
    The junior varsity and freshman teams were able to come away with wins though.

Battle between the ‘Cats on Friday

    While homecoming isn’t a coach’s favorite time of the football season, coach Jeff Reents will be hoping his Wildcats are fired up for another tough test this Friday.
    Wilmington will host Lisle this week, a team that is sitting in the top three of the I-8 small division, right behind the Wildcats and Peotone, and the Lions will be looking to put a damper on the purple and white homecoming.

Wildcats claim fifth at I-8 tourney

    The Wilmington golf team traveled to Wolf Creek on Monday to compete in the Interstate Eight Conference Tournament.
    The Wildcats wound up placing fifth overall with a team total of 378.
    Streator took the top spot with a 330, while Coal City (370) and Westmont (370) rounded out the top three teams.
    Ryan Woodall wound up tied for fifth place as an individual, while Garrett Roth  tied for 10th place.
    Woodall shot an 84 as an individual, as Roth followed with a 90.
