Council puts grant focus on historic business district

    Mayor Roy Strong says the original intent of a local grant program was to support the historic downtown business district, and the council is generally on board with changing the city code to reflect that.

City to crack down on meter tampering

    It’s not common, but some Wilmington residents actually disconnect the radio transmitter on their water meters so they don’t have to pay for all of the water  they use. But it’s not fair that the rest of us pay for their water, so the city is going to start cracking down on those violators.
    The water department is in the midst of a project to change out Datamatic brand radio transmitter meter heads whose batteries are failing prematurely. While the workers make those changes, they’re installing the new meter heads wired to detect if they’ve been disconnected.

City offers WBSA 99-year lease

    The city offered the Wilmington Baseball and Softball Association a 99-year lease for the parks where the city’s baseball and softball playing fields are located, and the City Council was slated to approve it Tuesday.

Coal City and its cops ink new contract

     The Metropolitan Alliance of Police Chapter 186 and the village of Coal City have come to terms on a six-year collective bargaining agreement that assures fair compensation to officers while limiting the town’s pension exposure.
    The terms of the new contract were ratified by  union membership and approved by the Village Board at its Sept. 12 meeting. The agreement is retroactive to May 1.

Post 1336 accepting donations for community veterans monument

Donations to the Community Veterans Memorial Fund maintained by St. Juvin Post 1336 Veterans of Foreign Wars can be made at First Midwest Bank, 5 S. Kankakee St., Coal City, or to VFW Post 1336, P.O. Box 191, Coal City, IL, 60416.  Donations to the fund are maintained in a separate account and are only used for maintaining and improving the memorial.

Coal City moving forward with water, storm improvements

     The village of Coal City will spend over $113,000 to upgrade municipal infrastructure along Fifth Avenue.
    Village engineer Ryan Hansen with Chamlin & Associates reports the work will include storm sewer upgrades at Fifth Avenue and Second Street where the storm drain has been in disrepair for some time.
    Hansen said the improvements will help with drainage in the area.
    The project also calls for two “deadend” water mains to be connected to complete the loop just north of the railroad crossing on Fifth Avenue.

Candidates start circulating petitions for local elections

     Tuesday was the first day individuals seeking election to local boards—municipal, school and library—could begin circulating nominating petitions for the consolidated election in spring 2019.
    Candidates have three months to collect the required signatures as completed statements of candidacy and nominating petitions must be filed by the close of business on Dec. 17.

Property purchases are for planned parking

     Over the course of several closed-session discussions the Coal City Village Board has been considering the acquisition of property. Last week the board announced publicly its plan to purchase two parcels along South Broadway for the town’s future parking needs.
    By a vote of the board, and in the case of one parcel not unanimously, trustees authorized the execution of purchase agreements for 160 and 622 S. Broadway. The total cost, not including interest, comes in around $222,000.

Grant funds will bring art therapy to area

The Braidwood Area Healthy Community Coalition (BAHCC) will bring a unique type of therapy to local residents in the coming months.

Earlier this month, the coalition announced it had received $10,000 in grant funds from the Community Foundation of Will County (CFWC) this year. It’s cash that the BAHCC will use to bring art therapy to the area.

Council approves zoning change

Braidwood has changed the way that some properties change hands, with an amendment to the city’s zoning code regarding nonconforming uses and buildings.

On Sept. 11, the City Council approved an amendment to the city’s code of ordinances regarding Chapter 23, which regulates zoning.
