Park district mulls expansion of ‘Kids Club’ with new building

The Wilmington Island Park District (WIPD) is on a roll. It recently held a ribbon cutting ceremony for its newest offering, a walking path/story walk in Wilmington's Children's Memorial Park.
The activity offers an ADA-compliant walking path around Northcrest Park. Walkers have the option of accessing story walk boards maintained by Wilmington Public Library. The story walk has been a big hit among Wilmington families.
It’s certainly an auspicious start, but WIPD executive director, Kirsten VanDuyne, has even bigger plans for the park, and she can’t wait for your input.

With Jewel’s opening Oct. 23, Diamond is on a roll

Terry Kernc, mayor of the village of Diamond, has made a lot of things happen. The opening of the long-awaited Jewel-Osco next week is simply one of the many feathers in her cap.
Kernc is not out to make a name for herself - she’s far too busy for that. Instead, she’s continually exploring ways to improve the village. She wants only the best for Diamond.

Learn how to Dial-A-Ride in Custer Park

Colin Phillips, mobility manager at Access Will County Dial-a-Ride program, will meet with Custer Township residents on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 6:30 p.m. at Custer Township Hall, 35332 Grant Ave., Custer Park.
Phillips will outline the program and accept registrations for the program.
Access Will County Dial-a-Ride is available to seniors, age 60 and older, and individuals with disabilities. The program offers access to destinations within Will County, one mile outside the county border, and parts of southern Cook County.

Open house to review plan for Wilm-Peotone Road

The Will County Division of Transportation (DOT) will host a public information open house in Wilmington about the future of Wilmington-Peotone Road, between Interstate 55 and Drecksler Road.
The public information meeting is part of a Planning and Environmental Linkages (PEL) Study being conducted on the 22-mile stretch of roadway between Wilmington and Peotone.

Those of us of a certain age maintain a store of memories from the “glory days” of our youth. When we start yapping about that time we got Robert Plant’s autograph, everyone finds a reason to leave the room.
When 77-year-old Greg Washburn of Diamond talks about glory days, not a soul leaves the room. That’s because he’s achieved true glory, all by himself.
Washburn was drafted by the California Angels out of Lewis University in Romeoville in the first round of the 1967 amateur draft as the 19th overall pick

Project Gemini coming to Wilmington, along with up to 800 trucks daily

At the Oct. 1, Wilmington City Council meeting, the council approved several components of the proposed Project Gemini.
Project Gemini involves the construction of a 1.65 million square foot office/warehouse distribution facility, part of the Elion Logistics Park 55, covering approximately 160 acres.
The warehouse will include two guard houses, truck wash, pedestrian gateway tower, truck entrance and exit, courtyard, emergency access, trailer parking, loading bays, associate parking and storm water retention.

Freedom of speech can be a slippery slope

The Sept. 24 Braidwood City Council meeting raised the subject of First Amendment Rights at public forums.
In summary, the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution protects five fundamental freedoms, including freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of (peaceful) assembly, and freedom to petition.
Resident Nicole Shores approached the council with concerns about her right to Freedom of Speech being violated.

Five-day detour planned for Coal City crossing

nt of Transportation is warning motorists that Illinois 113 will be closed for repairs at the BNSF Railroad crossing in Coal City on Monday, Oct. 7, for approximately five days.
A posted detour will direct eastbound Illinois 113 traffic to use Broadway Street, North Street and First Avenue. Westbound Illinois 113 traffic will use Fifth Avenue, North Street and Broadway Street.

Day for being generous with Lions members

The Braidwood Lions Club will again be participating in the Annual Lions of Illinois Foundation Candy Day Fundraiser.
Club members and volunteers will be holding a canister collection day on Friday, Oct. 11, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on the street corners of Rt.’s 113, 129 and 53 in Braidwood.

Willy doing a fine job being a Wildcat

The energy at WHS sporting events has been through the roof thanks to the town’s beloved school mascot, Willy the Wildcat.
It’s no question Willy has been killing his job of keeping the crowd entertained and in good spirits. It just makes you wonder who is beneath the mask. Who is Willy?
During the week Willy was able to set time out of his day for a short interview where we got to learn more about the marvelous mascot.
