Voters can cast early ballot

Early voting and vote by mail for the April 4 consolidated election is underway.
    Early voting for all county precincts takes place in the office of the Grundy County Clerk and Recorder located at the Grundy County Courthouse, 111 E. Washington St., Morris.
    The clerk’s office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Additionally, the office will be open for early voting on Saturday, April 1 from 9 a.m. to noon.

Coal City looking to fast track road improvements

As the road construction season approaches, the village of Coal City is looking to fast track its plan to re-pave a section of South Broadway.
    Plans call for a mill and overlay of the street from the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad crossing south through Spring Road, and town officials hope the work can be completed this year.

     On April 4 voters in the Village of Coal City will be asked a simple question, however the measure is far from easy to understand.
    The Coal City Village Board announced in November 2016 that it would place a question on the April ballot  seeking voter approval to become a home rule unit of government.

Coal City snuffs out smoking in parks

    Light a cigarette in one of Coal City’s public parks and you just might end up paying a fine.
    Stating it is in the best interest of the community, the Coal City Village Board adopted an ordinance that prohibits smoking in village owned parks, as well as indoor and outdoor recreation facilities.
    Town officials say banning smoking of tobacco in municipal parks will protect the health of its residents, reduce litter, protect the environment, and enhance the experience of park patrons, participants and spectators.

    The east end of Stripmine Road will be closed for nearly three months for improvements at the Union Pacific Railroad Crossing, beginning March 31.
    The Illinois Department of Transportation and Union Pacific will be adding a second track and improving the intersection with Route 53.
    D Construction put up the road closure signs last Thursday. Only the section between the east side of Davy Lane and Route 53 will be affected.

Residents asked for input for downtown plan

    The city will host a public kick-off event for the development of a Wilmington Downtown Plan on Wednesday, March 22, beginning at 6 p.m., at city hall. The downtown plan will outline the community’s vision for the future of the downtown as well as the policies and strategies that will allow it to achieve that vision.

School fee increase limited to books

    Registration for the 2017-2018 school year will cost parents an extra fin for books. The increase is a standard that was instituted in School District 209-U four years ago.
    The Board of Education approved a $5 increase in textbook rental fees during its Wednesday, March 8 meeting. While the board had been approving an across-the-board increase each year, only book fees increased this year. Fees for extra classes in middle school, such as shop, art, and science are not going to be increased this year as they have been in the past.

Coalition hosts heroin forum

    As Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow was listening to the speakers at last week's heroin forum organized by the Wilmington Coalition for a Healthy Community, he received confirmation of the 77th heroin overdose death in Will County for 2016. It's a new record, and one that's not acceptable to county leaders.
