City pursuing sales tax revenue

The city isn’t sure it’s receiving an accurate report of sales from a business at the RidgePort Logistics Center and is trying to work with the business to iron things out.
City administrator Frank Koehler told the council last week that he is trying to resolve issues with Ozinga Concrete and its sales tax reporting. Of the 7 percent sales tax applied to purchases here, 1 percent flows back to the city.  

Russi questions opponents’ statements

    Mike Russi is questioning claims made by his opponents for Park District commissioner that the fitness center is self sufficient, and that a lot of the $500,000 paid by the RidgePort Logistics Center development is in the bank as they maintain.
    Russi, incumbent Commissioner Dave Melhorn, former commissioner Randy Hill and Kevin Ptacek are all running for two open seats on the Wilmington Island Park District Board of Commissioners.
    The remarks were made by Hill and Melhorn during the Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s candidates’ forum on March 15:

    Candidates for the School Board, Park Board and mayor of Wilmington appeared at the Chamber of Commerce forum last week to state their positions on a number of issues pertinent to the unit of government they hope to serve.

Internationally known a cappela group to perform in Coal City

The second installment in the Megan Bugg Concert Series is just one month away.
    A cappela group Street Corner Symphony will be in Coal City Saturday, April 22 for a 7 p.m. performance at in the Coal City Unit 1 Auditorium at Coal City High School.
    Street Corner Symphony is a six-man group from Nashville. They came to international notoriety in 2010 when they became runners-up on NBC’s “The Sing Off.”

Resident tosses out idea of disc golf

As disc golf continues to gain popularity,  a Coal City resident is tossing around the idea for a community course.
    Matt McClenning pitched his idea to the Village Board earlier this month and trustees expressed an interest in bringing the sport to town.
    Disc golf, also know as Frisbee golf, is similar to traditional golf. The big difference being the use of discs rather than clubs and a ball. It also follows the same general rules with players trying to complete a select number of holes in the least number of  throws.

Planning underway for annual Family Wellness Night

The Unit 1 School District Wellness Committee is preparing for its 6th annual Family Wellness Night.
    Scheduled for Tuesday, April 11, the event will feature health and wellness services offered by a variety of local businesses, organizations and public service agencies. There will be demonstrations and activities centered around the common theme of wellness.
    So far around 50 vendors have signed up to participate in the fair. Unit 1 Superintendent Dr. Kent Bugg expects the number of vendors to outpace last year.

Voters can cast early ballot

Early voting and vote by mail for the April 4 consolidated election is underway.
    Early voting for all county precincts takes place in the office of the Grundy County Clerk and Recorder located at the Grundy County Courthouse, 111 E. Washington St., Morris.
    The clerk’s office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Additionally, the office will be open for early voting on Saturday, April 1 from 9 a.m. to noon.

Coal City looking to fast track road improvements

As the road construction season approaches, the village of Coal City is looking to fast track its plan to re-pave a section of South Broadway.
    Plans call for a mill and overlay of the street from the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad crossing south through Spring Road, and town officials hope the work can be completed this year.

     On April 4 voters in the Village of Coal City will be asked a simple question, however the measure is far from easy to understand.
    The Coal City Village Board announced in November 2016 that it would place a question on the April ballot  seeking voter approval to become a home rule unit of government.

Coal City snuffs out smoking in parks

    Light a cigarette in one of Coal City’s public parks and you just might end up paying a fine.
    Stating it is in the best interest of the community, the Coal City Village Board adopted an ordinance that prohibits smoking in village owned parks, as well as indoor and outdoor recreation facilities.
    Town officials say banning smoking of tobacco in municipal parks will protect the health of its residents, reduce litter, protect the environment, and enhance the experience of park patrons, participants and spectators.
