Park Board setting rules for public comment

    The Island Park District Board of Commissioners is considering an ordinance setting rules for public participation during its meetings.
    The board currently permits public comment at each meeting, during a period specified for that purpose. Each speaker is limited to three minutes, with a total of 15 minutes per meeting dedicated to public comment. The agenda indicates that board members ordinarily will not respond to presentations, and no action can be taken, although the board may give staff directions in response to the presentation.

Symerton to build its first park

    The village of Symerton is planning to annex 1.7 acres of farmland to develop a children’s park and a ballfield — the first for this small town that was founded in 1880.
    Village President Eli Geiss proposed developing a park for the community’s children, and the Village Board agreed. The project has moved forward over the course of the last nine or 10 months.
    “The kids don’t have any place to play up here,” Geiss commented. “We have like 30-some kids, so this will be nice for them.”

Youth theater workshop offered in Coal City

Small Town Theatrics, a community theater founded and based in Coal City, will host a youth workshop this summer.
    Students entering fourth to ninth grades are invited to take part in the two-week workshop exploring various aspects of theatrical performance, from acting and vocals, to choreography and set design.
    The workshop will be directed by Jack Micetich, founder of Small Town Theatrics and musical director for Coal City Unit 1 School District. He will be assisted by vocal director Shanan D’Agostino.

New elementary school near completion

Students exited the halls of the Reed-Custer intermediate and primary schools for the last time on Monday, May 22.

With the end of the school year comes the end of an era — the district’s two schools that housed grades preK through 5 will be closed, and the new Reed-Custer Elementary School will open its doors this fall.

Superintendent Mark Mitchell gave an update on the construction of the new school to the Board of Education on May 17. The new two-story structure between School and Walker Streets is near completion.

Braidwood pays respect to military on Memorial Day

Sunny skies and pleasant temperatures made for a picture perfect Monday morning as nearly 200 folks came out to mark Memorial Day at the Reed Township Veterans Memorial in Braidwood.

The annual Memorial Day ceremony and laying of a wreath at the memorial brought out residents and local dignitaries, paying their respect to those who paid the ultimate price while  defending our country.

Will County Executive Larry Walsh spoke to the crowd, noting the importance of having respect for the members of the military.

City extends olive branch to homeowners

A Braidwood couple looking to spruce up their aging home has reached a truce with the city, but not before asking members of the City Council one more time about the problems with their permit application.

Chris and Kim Earling want to rehab a 1960s-era home at the corner of First and Mitchell streets. But their efforts to clean up the property and fix their home came to a halt after a disagreement with the city’s building inspector.
