Youth theater workshop offered in Coal City

Small Town Theatrics, a community theater founded and based in Coal City, will host a youth workshop this summer.
    Students entering fourth to ninth grades are invited to take part in the two-week workshop exploring various aspects of theatrical performance, from acting and vocals, to choreography and set design.
    The workshop will be directed by Jack Micetich, founder of Small Town Theatrics and musical director for Coal City Unit 1 School District. He will be assisted by vocal director Shanan D’Agostino.

New elementary school near completion

Students exited the halls of the Reed-Custer intermediate and primary schools for the last time on Monday, May 22.

With the end of the school year comes the end of an era — the district’s two schools that housed grades preK through 5 will be closed, and the new Reed-Custer Elementary School will open its doors this fall.

Superintendent Mark Mitchell gave an update on the construction of the new school to the Board of Education on May 17. The new two-story structure between School and Walker Streets is near completion.

Braidwood pays respect to military on Memorial Day

Sunny skies and pleasant temperatures made for a picture perfect Monday morning as nearly 200 folks came out to mark Memorial Day at the Reed Township Veterans Memorial in Braidwood.

The annual Memorial Day ceremony and laying of a wreath at the memorial brought out residents and local dignitaries, paying their respect to those who paid the ultimate price while  defending our country.

Will County Executive Larry Walsh spoke to the crowd, noting the importance of having respect for the members of the military.

City extends olive branch to homeowners

A Braidwood couple looking to spruce up their aging home has reached a truce with the city, but not before asking members of the City Council one more time about the problems with their permit application.

Chris and Kim Earling want to rehab a 1960s-era home at the corner of First and Mitchell streets. But their efforts to clean up the property and fix their home came to a halt after a disagreement with the city’s building inspector.

No-go for early graduation

After several months of talking it over, the Reed-Custer Board of Eduction has decided not to put an official early graduation policy on the books.

Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning Christine Nelson told members of the Board of Education on May 17 that the district would like to keep current policies in place when it comes to handing out diplomas.

City to residents: Be patient with drainage issues

Braidwood Mayor Jim Vehrs wants the public to know that the city is still working on answers to the problems that have several residents all wet.

“The rain is killing us,” Vehrs said of the wet weather that has plagued the area for the past several weeks. “We live in an area where there is no drainage in some areas. Be patient, it’s got to quit sooner or later, it’s got to dry up. I know there’s a lot of concerns out there with the residents that there is standing water in their yards. The water table is very high right now. We are addressing these problems as need be.”

First rabid bat of season found in Wilmington

    A bat captured by a resident of the 500 block of Barnes Drive in Wilmington last week tested positive for rabies. The Will County Health Department recommended that the resident and six others begin post exposure treatment for rabies.

    On the morning of Saturday, May 20, the homeowner noticed her five-month old puppy playing with a strange object in her backyard. Upon investigation, she discovered that the object was a small bat.
