Old Smokey Park becomes a training ground for painting apprentices

Tyler Nelson smeared a brushful of chocolate- colored paint on the Old Smokey Community Building in Braidwood Thursday and turned to other painters nearby.
“I kinda like this color,” he declared while stroking up and down. “It sure beats white.”
He got a hardy chuckle from his painting partners.
As apprentice painters, he explained, they paint a lot of white.
“I never knew there were so many variations of white. With most commercial and industrial jobs white seems to be the preferred color of choice.”

Helicopter makes quick work out of an all day job

What’s the fastest way to lift over 58,000 pounds 10 stories high? Observers watched Friday as a helicopter did the job in less time it takes for your morning routine, coffee included.
Midwest Helicopter Airways of Willowbrook, IL beelined it to Diamond early Friday, then banked around the 64,000 square foot building under construction as the new Jewel-Osco supermarket with a Starbucks.

Cabin Fest canceled

The Cabin Festival at Goose Lake Prairie State Park has been canceled due to threat of weather and no building for shelter. Instead, weaving demonstrations and history on the Cragg Family cabin will be on display at the Grundy County Historical Museum, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday at 510 W. Illinois St., Morris. Still a great opportunity to learn about this pioneering family.

Council tables hard liquor request for Berkot’s Super Foods

Like “Beauty and the Beast,” the liquor license issue in Wilmington is a tale as old as time.
At the May 21 Wilmington City Council meeting, Luke Kotara, owner of Berkot's Foods, and Kamlesh Patel, of Mobil Gas For Less station in the 200 block of East Baltmore St., petitioned the city council to approve licenses for the sale of hard liquor – in addition to beer and wine – at their respective businesses.
Kotara spoke of staying relevant in the grocery game, especially with a Jewel-Osco store about to open in Diamond.

Wildcats to play at state Friday

For the first time in 19 years the Wilmington baseball team has won a Super Sectional, advancing to the Final Four State Tournament.

The Wildcats upended Peoria Notre Dame, 5-0 on Monday to claim the Geneseo Super Sectional.

Junior pitcher Kyle Farrell threw over 100 pitches, striking out 11 batters and giving up only one hit through all seven innings. He was backed up by error-free fielding to improve the Wildcat record to 27-1 overall.
