Coalers stick with Devils but fall short of win

The Coal City basketball team fell 36-25 in a tough game with Peotone on Friday.
The Coalers jumped in front but Peotone caught up to take an 18-15 half-time lead.
After that, the Blue Devils outscored the Coalers the rest of the way to get the win.
Aiden Hansen led the offense with eight points while Carter Garrelts wasn’t far behind him with six points.
Peotone got a huge effort from Miles Heflin who had 19.
Garrelts began scoring for the Coalers with a three from the top of the key to give them a 3-2 lead.

Coalers continue to dominate, seven straight

The Coal City matmen captured five more wins to make it seven straight to start the season.
They dismantled Mendota on Wednesday, 78-0 thanks to 42 points courtesy of seven forfeits. They added six pins to that for the shutout.
That same night they clobbered Mooseheart, 72-9 getting help from eight forfeits right out of the gate. They followed that with four pins.

Lady Coalers continue hot start, cruising past Panthers, Wildcats

The Coal City girls basketball team used a strong third quarter run to beat Manteno 47-37 on Monday.
The Lady Coalers 6-1 (2-1) grabbed the early advantage and held on for a 19-14 half-time lead.
They poured on another 20 points to increase it to 39-28 at the end of three.
Manteno did end up outscoring Coal City in the final frame but it was too little too late as the Coalers held on.

Coaler matmen start the season right

The Coal City wrestling team took care of business with two big wins against Joliet Central and Shepard to begin their season.
The Coalers started with a crushing blow to Shepard. They got great help from four forfeits right off the bat. Then, they kept chipping away with the help of four pins, a Riley Dehler technical fall, a Mataeo Blessing major decision and a Derek Carlson decision to wrap up their first win.

Of eight state champions, two win for the first time

The 14th week of high school football was a doozy with a few surprises. There were two teams that captured their first-ever state championships on Friday while the experienced playoff teams took care of business.
Teams in Class 1A through 4A won by running the ball and controlling the line of scrimmage. In Class 5A-8A, teams found they had to open it up and throw the ball to win.

Lady Coalers fall to Devils for first loss

The Coal City girls basketball team had a tough time with a good Peotone team, losing 56-27 on Monday.
The Lady Coalers fell behind early and the Devils took advantage as they grabbed a 21-13 half-time lead.
They kept building from there with 35 more points to the Lady Coalers 14 to put the final nail in the coffin.
The Lady Coalers shot 33 percent from the floor, had no threes and were under 50 % from the line.

Coalers fall to Manteno, fifth in own Turkey Tournament

The Coal City boys basketball team played a close game with Manteno but fell 42-38 on Saturday which gave them fifth place in their own Turkey Tournament.
The tournament was won by Beecher, who ended up beating Morris, 67-59 in the championship game. Peotone (70-40 over G-SW) and IC Catholic (59-41 over Serena) were second and third place winners.

The 2021 IHSA Football State Championship games will air live on statewide television via Gray Media’s IHSA TV Network on Friday and Saturday.
The eight state title games will be contested at Huskie Stadium on the campus of Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. Fans on the go can also watch the games via their mobile devices on the NFHS Network at https://www.nfhsnetwork.com/associations/ihsa.
The Wilmington Wildcats will be featured at 1 p.m. for the 2A title game against Nashville.

Multiple teams back for a chance at another state title

The state playoffs are down to two teams in each of the eight classes. Some have been there before, some haven’t.
There were a few surprises in the semifinals but for the most part, the top teams took care of business.
In Class 2A, The Wilmington Wildcats (13-0) dismantled the Tri Valley Vikings 42-14 to make it back to state for the third time in the history of their storied program. In those two chances, they’ve captured one state title (2014) and a runner-up (2005).

Coalers in search of a dual team title, will rely on strong upper weight classes

A very depthy and talented Coal City wrestling team is back in search of a dual team state title.
The Coalers who had Zach Finch place second and Brody Widlowski as a sixth place medalist, are not taking anything for granted.
“We can’t take anything for granted,” said Coal City wrestling coach Mark Masters. “We had a lot of injuries last year on top of it.
Coal City is blessed with a lot of very good wrestlers in the upper weights which is going to leave Masters with a tough decision on who to put in.
