Community dinner needs a cook

A cook is needed for the Community Thanksgiving dinner, and if one can’t be found the event will be shelved for a second year.
The idea for a community dinner was conceived by a local resident who wanted to treat individuals who were financially struggling. For six seasons a traditional Thanksgiving meal was served to anyone who showed up on the Sunday prior to the November holiday.

The village of Coal City hasn’t thrown the towel in on a program that could provide much needed funding to fix up neighborhoods.
As the saying goes, “If at first you don’t succeed, try again.”

Census Bureau recruiting workers

Across the country an estimated 500,000 temporary workers will be hired by the U.S. Census Bureau as the agency gears up for the 2020 Census. Hundreds of workers will be hired for local count.
The village of Coal City is working with Carbon Hill and Diamond, and a host of local agencies and organizations, to get the word out about the upcoming Census and the need for local workers to complete tasks like in-field address canvassing, to clerks and operations, and field supervisors.

A three-year deal

The Unit 1 Board of Education and six boards from other taxing districts have agreed to a three-year extension of a property tax agreement with Exelon.
The equalized assessed value (EAV) of the company’s Dresden Nuclear Generating Station will remain unchanged at $490 million for at least the next three years.

Death of Verona woman ruled a homicide

The death of a Verona woman found inside her burning home has been ruled a homicide.
Grundy County Sheriff Ken Briley in correlation with Grundy County Coroner John Callahan announced Monday that Elizabeth Ann Link, 39, died as the result of an undetermined inflicted trauma.

Students learn the power of giving

This may sound crazy but 18 Coal City teenagers were given $5,000 as a group and told to spend it wisely. What they did was award it to six community groups they thought needed it most.
It was a pretty powerful lesson, one that let them experience philanthropy and why it matters.
The Community Foundation of Grundy County orchestrates the Youth Philanthropy program. It started five years ago with a group of students from Seneca Township High School. The idea behind the program was to instill in young people the importance of giving.

Coal City teams with Joliet Slammers for Community Night

The village of Coal City and the Park Board are teaming up with the Joliet Slammers for a community night event.
Coal City Community Night at the DuPage Medical Group Field is set for Saturday, June 15 when the Slammers take on the Washington Wild Things in a 6:05 p.m. game.
Coal City Village Administrator Matt Fritz reports the village has teamed with several community organizations to be a part of the special event.

Coal City supports getting rid of inactive crossings

For more than a decade the village of Coal City has been seeking approval from the Federal Railroad Authority for a quiet zone corridor. Instead, what village officials have discovered is that three rail crossings could qualify for exempt status.
Village Administrator Matt Fritz reports such a determination allows signs to be posted at the railroad crossing and/or the railroad warning crossbucks be removed in order to formally notify passersby the crossing is no longer active.

Town hall set for Saturday

As the South Broadway reconstruction project enters its sixth week, the village of Coal City will host a town hall open house this weekend for residents to learn more about the project.
The $4.5 million reconstruction project includes a new roadway complete with center turn lane and bike lanes on both the east and west sides, infrastructure upgrades, and a streetscape that will provide new sidewalks, street lights and landscaping.

A principal with passion

On Mitch Hamann’s first day at Coal City High School, enrollment was right around 400 students and on his final first day there were just over 700 in the building.
An increase in student enrollment numbers is just one of the many changes he’s witnessed in his 33 years as an educator and administrator at the school.
Hamann worked through three building additions and witnessed an expansion of both academic and extra-curicular offerings. Both were necessary to accommodate an expanding student population.
