McGrath joins the force

     Coal City’s Police Department is back to full force as the village welcomed a new member last week.
    Kevin McGrath, who previously patrolled the streets of Streator, is now on the job. He was sworn in Wednesday, May 9 and reported for his first shift on Monday.
    “I’m looking forward to it and hope to bring some of my experiences to Coal City,” McGrath said.
    The new patrol officer has eight years of police experience and a long list of certifications.

An expanded place to play

     Since the day it opened, the Hope Helps all-inclusive playground has been filled with individuals of all ages and abilities, and it’s about to get busier.
    Hope Helps founder Brittney Kaluzny presented  the Coal City Village Board with some exciting news last week.
    “We are ready to expand (the playground) if you are willing to accept it,” she said.

Overall Coaler

Jennifer Kenney describes seniors Nick Berta and Bridget Kauzlaric as the Overall Coaler, student leaders who are involved in school activities and achieved success in the classroom.
Each spring the Illinois Principals Association (IPA) recognizes students based on nominations received from their school principal. IPA members can select two students from the outgoing class from their building to receive recognition at an annual ceremony held at the Rialto Square Theatre in Joliet.

Broadway bound

Stage productions are more than actors on the stage, there are playwrights, sound designers, costumers, conductors, stage hands, carpenters, playbill writers and so many others working behind the scenes to tell a story.
Coal City High School's drama club has been exploring the various aspects of theater production with trips to regional theaters, where members take part in workshops with theater professionals.

Unit 1 sets summer school dates

     As the school year comes to a close, the Unit 1 Board of Education is looking ahead to the summer session.
    In an attempt to give younger students a headstart on a new school year, the district will once again offer a late summer program for children in kindergarten to fifth grade.

So when he observed student-athletes behaving in a manner that wasn’t quite acceptable he knew it was time to take action.

Construction continues

     One year ago this week the village of Coal City entered into a redevelopment agreement with Hoffman Transportation for a shipping and transloading facility. As the anniversary date approaches, the company wants an extension of its planned unit development (PUD) plan.
    Through its attorney, Kenneth A. Carlson with the Joliet firm of Tracy, Johnson & Wilson, Hoffman Transportation has requested a 90-day extension of its original plan.

Coal City backs away from parking plan

    The yellow tape was pulled up, parking blocks loaded on a trailer and the signs designating the parkways between Park and Chestnut streets for reverse angle parking were hauled away Tuesday morning.
    Reverse angle parking is gone and it won’t be making a return as the Coal City Village Board approved a South Broadway reconstruction plan that includes traditional head-in angle parking.
    “Common sense prevails,” was the response a Coal City Courant reader posted on a social media post announcing the board’s decision.

Drama Club expands offerings for Coaler thespians

     Coal City High School’s Drama Club will present the fifth annual Broadway Revue, “60 Minutes to Broadway,” this weekend in the Coal City Performing Arts Center.
    This is the first year the club will serve as the sponsor of the musical revue set for 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 4 and 3 p.m. Saturday, May 5.
    Formerly under the sponsorship of Jane Swinney and Sherfy Browning, who both retired from the program this year,  Drama Club is now advised by Jack Micetich.

Payton to attend Boys State

    Wills Payton has been selected to represent Coal City High School and Coal City American Legion Post 796 at the 83rd annual session of Illinois Premier Boys State, June 9 to 15, at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.
    American Legion Illinois Premier Boys State is a unique program for outstanding high school juniors that focuses on participation and personal experience in a model state. It is among the most respected and selective educational programs of government instruction.
