Grundy County assessment data rolled out

Assessment notices started arriving in mailboxes last week, and listings posted in local newspapers displayed the assessed values of the 27,000 parcels that make up Grundy County.
The assessed value of the county is up $100,000 million to $2.5 billion, according to County Board Chairman Chris Balkema.
Grundy County’s 2020 assessment data has been released by the county assessor’s office about seven weeks earlier than during 2019.

Hines VA outreach team returns to Grundy County

The Grundy County Veterans Assistance Commission [VAC] has announced that the Edward Hines VA Medical Center Outreach Team will be returning to Grundy County starting next week.
The Hines Outreach Team and the Grundy VAC will be in Gardner on Monday, Oct. 19. In partnership with the Community Foundation of Grundy County we are able to use the South Grundy Resource Center, 229 Liberty St., Gardner to offer services to southern Grundy County and surrounding areas from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Flu vaccine clinic set for Oct. 21

The Grundy County Health Department is offering adult seasonal flu vaccine by drive-thru appointment on Wednesday, Oct. 21 from 10 a.m. to noon.
Regular dose is available for those residents 18 years and older, and the high dose is available for residents 65 years and older. Each is quadrivalent, which is designed to protect against four different flu viruses, including two influenza A viruses and two influenza B viruses. Additional information on the 2020-2021 flu vaccine composition can be located the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website at cdc.gov.

As superintendent of schools, Dr. Kent Bugg is working with local leaders who have joined together with a common goal: Protecting the community from the unexpected closure of Dresden Nuclear Generating Station.
Exelon Nuclear announced late in August its intent to close the generating station in November 2021, one of two plants they say will shut down next year absent wide-ranging energy legislation.

Unit 1 Board members earn master status

Four members of the Unit 1 Board of Education were recognized for their participation in programs and events hosted by the Illinois Association of School Boards.
Unit 1 Board president Ken P. Miller and member Quint Harmon were honored for achieving master board member level 2 status and vice president Shawn Hamilton and member Robert Bianchetta earned the status of master board member maintained.

A roll over of the rankings

Exemplary is the designation given by the Illinois State Board of Education to the states’ top performing schools, and this year the rankings are a rollover from 2019.
Statewide 334 elementary schools and 68 high schools earned the mark of exemplary and that includes Coal City’s Early Childhood Center, Elementary School and Intermeidate School.

A group of volunteer patriots are traversing the country to inspire and unite the nation under the founding concepts life, liberty, justice, freedom and opportunity.
Under the direction of Arizona resident Dave Graybill, Patriots, God and Country was established and its message is being shared by a company of volunteers who are on a 5,000 mile journey across the country to spread a message of love, understanding and unity.

Thinking outside the box

In these unprecedented days of pandemic with so many events and outings canceled, the Coal City Theatre Department is finding a new way to bring theater to the community and provide students with an outlet to showcase their talents. This weekend, an all-student cast will present “The Outsiders,” a two act play by Christopher Sergel and based upon the novel by S.E. Hinton. Director Jack Micetich had the title on his short list for shows in 2019, but in the end decided to go in a different direction and slated the title for fall 2020.

September showers, falling temperatures

Fall arrived in Grundy County last month, bringing cooler days and noticeably less sunshine.
The Grundy County Emergency Management Agency’s [GCEMA] weather data division reports the average daily temperature for September was 65 degrees, roughly 10 degrees cooler than the preceding month. The highest daily temperature for the month was recorded at 86 degrees on Sept. 3 and the daily low of 40 degrees was posted Sept. 19.
