As you know, much of what I write is from the local newspapers, in particular the Wilmington Advocate. Although there were Braidwood papers, almost none have survived. Ed Conley was the owner and editor of the Wilmington paper. He had a sharp wit and always gave as good as he got. Let's look at some of his less than serious writing.
Conley had worked for the newspaper even before he volunteered for the Civil War. On his return he again worked for the paper, and in 1872 purchased it. The first tongue-in-cheek article was published on March 9.
