Carbon Hill cancels 2020 Homecoming

It is one of the most anticipated festivals of the summer season, but this year there will be no Homecoming in the village of Carbon Hill.
Late last week the village’s Homecoming Committee announced it would be suspending the festival due to the current global pandemic.
“After weighing the risks, precautions and the latest recommendations from the Illinois Governor regarding COVID-19, it is with heavy hearts the village of Carbon Hill has elected to cancel this year’s 71st annual Carbon Hill Homecoming and Parade,” village officials announced Monday.
This year’s festival, scheduled for the fourth week in June, would have been the town’s 71st annual Homecoming.
Carbon Hill’s summer celebration began in 1949 as a reunion for former mine workers. The event grew into a five-day festival in the town’s park featuring a carnival, entertainment, bingo, a softball tournament, fireworks and a Sunday afternoon parade that’s been known to attract thousands of people.
Over the years organizers have also looked at ways to bring something new to the festival and that’s included a craft show, bean bag tournament and costumed characters.
Although daily events have been canceled during the festival due to weather conditions, this is the first time the festival has been canceled for a season.
Most reacting to the news via social media expressed sadness and at least one person noted how, “perfect it will be when we get it back.”
“We appreciate your understanding during these unprecedented times,” village officials stated. “We look forward to seeing you all next year.”
