A REPORT OF a bomb inside Coal City McDonald’s was received by restaurant staff Monday morning. Police and fire units were notified of the call just before 9 a.m. and responded to the restaurant where they evacuated customers and staff. A bomb detecting canine and technician from Kane County responded and found nothing suspicious in the building.
An unknown individual placed a call to the Coal City McDonald’s Monday morning and indicated there was a bomb in the building.
Coal City Police and Fire Protection District personnel were notified just before 9 a.m. and units responded to the restaurant at 2 S. Broadway.
First responders evacuated the building, locked down the area and began interviewing employees.
Coal City Police Chief Tom Best said the threat was non-specific in nature. The caller rather simply stated there was a bomb in the building. No specific information was given, nor was there a threat to another area within the community.
The Kane County Bomb Squad was contacted and sent a bomb detecting canine and technician who went through the building. Nothing suspicious was found.
At 11 a.m., Best reported the building was clear and the restaurant would be re-opening.
The chief reported the focus of first responders was to ensure the area was safe.
Due to the large number of police and fire units located at the intersection of South Broadway and Division Street, the north portion of South Broadway was closed for much of the morning.
The focus for police moving forward will be to locate the person responsible for making the threat.
Best said his department will pursue charges against the caller.
At the direction of the police chief, Unit 1 schools were not locked down, rather they were instructed to continue observing the daily safety procedures. At no time were the schools or students in any danger as a result of the morning incident.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police at 815-634-2341.
