Pumpkin decorating, face painting, a costume contest and a haunted 5K are just a few of the activities planned for this weekend’s Hello Fall Festival and Craft Fair.
Coal City High School’s Drama Club is sponsoring the event that gets underway on Sunday, Oct. 20, at 1 p.m., and concludes with its second annual Only Ghouls Run on Halloween 5K fun run/walk.
A dozen local crafters and vendors featuring handcrafted items from cards and textiles, to Tupperware will be set up in the school’s west parking lot. Pam’s Famous Corn Dogs will be there, as will BBQ and Baker with its popular wood fired fare and baked goods.
There will be inflatables for kids, various fall themed carnival games and face painting sponsored by the Coal City High School Art Club. The Coal City Public Library District is also joining in the fun with pumpkin decorating and mini-golf.
A costume contest is set to take place at 5 p.m. and there will be a special Halloween themed performance by the On Broadway Dancers.
“We have a lot of great activities planned for the day and hope the community comes out for some fall fun,” said Drama Club member Addey Connor, who’s taken a lead role in organizing the festival.
Admission is $1 per person. Food and items sold by crafters and vendors is extra.
In addition to all of the daytime activities, the Drama Club’s haunted 5K will step off at 5:30 p.m. with runners taking the lead and walkers following.
Participants of all ages are encouraged to take part in this unique timed race through the neighborhoods surrounding the high school. The run starts and ends at the school and it’s all on a paved course with special surprises along the 3.2-mile route. Costumes or Halloween attire is encouraged, but not required.
The cost to participate is $30 per person. Registration can be completed online at bit.ly/ogroh19 or on race day beginning at 5 p.m.
Proceeds from the 5K and fall festival will benefit Drama Club theatre visits, master classes and a 2020 educational trip to New York City.
“Last year’s race was a lot of fun for those who ran the course and our Drama Club students who greeted them along the route, so we are anticipating this year’s race to be just as enjoyable,” said Jack Micetich, the school’s Drama Club advisor.
“The members of our group, especially Addey, have been working hard on this event and are very excited about what they have planned. The addition of the fall festival was their idea and they’ve done a good job pulling it together. We’re grateful to all of the groups who are partnering with us and we invite the community to enjoy a great fall day and evening with us,” Micetich added.
Along with the Drama Club activities, the Coal City Parent School Organization (PSO) is joining in the fun with its first ever Trunk-or-Treat.
From 4 to 7 p.m., all Unit 1 School District students and children under 12 are invited to go from trunk to trunk collecting treats from participants who will decorate the trunk of their vehicle and hand out treats.
The cost to participate is $1 or a canned food item that will be donated to help feed the less fortunate. The cost to host a trunk is $10. To learn more visit the Coal City Parent School Organization Facebook page.
All activities will be held in the west parking of the high school. Vehicles must enter from Route 113 (Division Street) as the Carbon Hill Road entrance will be closed.
