Nine displaced in early morning fire

One person was injured in an early morning apartment fire.
It was 3:19 a.m. when the Grundy County 911 Center received a call advising of a fire in a second floor unit at 30 N. Broadway.
Coal City Fire Protection District personnel arrived on the scene shortly after to find smoke showing from the second story of the two story commerical/residential structure. The office of Dr. David J. Casper & Associates is located on the main level with three apartments on the second floor.
As fire crews arrived, Coal City Police were already evacuating tenants from the building.
The fire was extinguished and crews began cleaning up before 5 a.m.
Due to the location of the fire, Division Street was closed between DeWitt and Kankakee Street for about an hour. North Broadway between Division and First Streets was also closed, but was reopened before 7 a.m.
Following an investigation by Coal City Fire investigator it was determined to be accidentally caused by a candle with damage amounts still to be determined.
One resident was transported from the scene in stable condition, the exact cause of injury was not released.
Nine people were displaced and are in the care of the American Red Cross.
“Our crews did a fantastic job in extinguishing the fire quickly and safely. Thank you to all of our mutual aid companies who assisted as well,” said James Sheldon, Coal City’s fire chief.
Agencies assisting included Wilmington, Gardner, Morris, Channahon, Braidwood, Dwight, Manhattan, Minooka, East Joliet, Seneca EMA, Wilmington ESDA, Grundy County EMA, as well as Coal City Police and Grundy County Sheriff’s Office.
