Parents for Scouting chili cook-off is Saturday

It’s almost time for Boy Scout Troop 466 Parents for Scouting’s second annual Chili Cook-off.
The contest is just days away and individual and team chili makers are preparing their best batches to support the local scout troop.
The chili cook-off is set for Saturday, Oct. 26 from noon to 3 p.m. at the Assumption Church Berst Center on South Kankakee Street.
There are two ways to participate in the fundraiser—complete and consume. Those who wish to compete can take their best shot at winning in one of three categories—homestyle, traditional and veggie. There will also be a People’s Choice Award handed out. The cost to compete is $30 per entry.
Those who simply want to sample the various homemade chili and cast a vote for the best tasting chili can attend for $10 per person or $30 for a family.
There will also be a bake sale, fresh cooked Dutch oven treats made by scouts, raffles, prizes and entertainment.
Proceeds from the chili cook-off will benefit shelter renovations and the purchase of a camp trailer for Troop 466.
The shelter located on Illinois Street has been the scouts home for over 40 years. To provide adequate meeting space for the growing troop, plans have been drawn for an addition to the building including new electrical service, updated furnace and air conditioning, along with new lighting throughout the space.
Additionally, Troop 466 has a camp/equipment trailer that has been in service since 1998 and with a growing troop it can not effectively hold all the troops gear. Funds raised will go toward the purchase of a trailer capable of holding the troop’s 17 tents, three patrol boxes, tarps, lanterns, cooking and other necessary supplies.
