Scouting for food! Annual food drive this weekend

ALMOST 6,000 POUNDS of food was collected last year by Boy and Girl Scouts who canvassed Coal City, Diamond and Carbon Hill last year. This photo shows a room full of food collected for the local pantry by members of Coal City Area Pack 466. Cub and Boy Scouts are hoping to surpass that total this weekend when the annual food drive is held in all three communities. Residents are asked to place bags of food on front door steps before noon on Sunday as Scouts will be going door-to-door for the annual collection. Photo provided.
Last year local girl and boy scouts troops collected almost 6,000 pounds of food during the annual food drive to supply the local pantry.
This year Cub Scout Pack 466 and others want to beat that record and they need your help starting Saturday.
Pack 466 organizes the food drive to benefit the Coal City Food Pantry. As in the past, the scouts are calling on area residents to pick up a few extra items when venturing out the grocery store this week.
The door-to-door food collection begins Saturday, Nov. 4 when Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts will distribute collection bags to doorsteps throughout the villages of Carbon Hill, Coal City and Diamond. The sacks are used to make contributions of non-perishable food items, paper products, household cleaning supplies and personal care items. All donations must be in sealed, original containers and display current expiration dates.
On Sunday, Nov. 5 food bags should be left on doorsteps by 11 a.m. The scouting groups will return to collect the filled bags starting at noon. All items collected will be delivered to the pantry, sorted by volunteers and distributed to food pantry patrons.
Organizers report the community-wide event has been extremely successful due to the willingness of the community to support the scouts and food pantry’s efforts to provide for area residents.
