Teen escapes car that veers off road into lake

A 17-YEAR-OLD driver escaped from his vehicle that entered Lincoln Lake in Feliz Township in an area of the roadway with no guard rails. Divers were called in to hook up the vehicle so it could be pulled out of the lake.
The Grundy County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a single-vehicle crash that occurred Monday, Feb. 23 at approximately 7:30 p.m. Monday along Coal City Road.
Authorities said the incident happened approximately half a mile north of Whitetie Road. According to preliminary findings, a silver Ford Focus was traveling northbound when a deer entered the roadway from an unknown direction.
Investigators reported that the driver swerved in an attempt to avoid the animal but was unable to regain control of the vehicle. The car crossed into the southbound lane, exited the roadway, and traveled across the west ditch before becoming airborne. It then fell roughly 10 feet onto a frozen lake below.
The driver, a 17-year-old male from Coal City and the sole occupant of the vehicle, was able to free himself before the car became fully submerged. He sustained minor injuries and was transported by Coal City EMS to Morris Hospital for evaluation and treatment.
The teen was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. The crash remains under investigation.
