Mao, who saved partner’s life, was a crime fighter for 8 years

On a muggy night in July of 2019, Wilmington Police Sgt. Kristopher Hopper and his partner were out patrolling. Hopper, the more experienced of the pair, was at the wheel of the squad, while his partner, Officer Mao, remained silent, keenly observing the world around him.
Cruising the north end of town, Hopper spotted a shadowy form creeping around the lot of the Launching Pad. As he pulled into the lot, a frisson of anxiety hit him in the gut.

Ordinance would require everyone to carry loaf of bread

The Wilmington City Council is considering an ordinance that would require anyone who lives within the city to carry a loaf of bread in their car.

The reason is due to the large flock of domestic geese that continues to block Bridge Street which is a major highway that runs through town. The geese, who have made the north and south island parks their home, frequently stop traffic when they waddle from one side of the Historic Route 66 to the other.

The problem is they are slow to cross and fearless of cars as they associate vehicles with easy food.

Project Gemini coming to Wilmington, along with up to 800 trucks daily

At the Oct. 1, Wilmington City Council meeting, the council approved several components of the proposed Project Gemini.
Project Gemini involves the construction of a 1.65 million square foot office/warehouse distribution facility, part of the Elion Logistics Park 55, covering approximately 160 acres.
The warehouse will include two guard houses, truck wash, pedestrian gateway tower, truck entrance and exit, courtyard, emergency access, trailer parking, loading bays, associate parking and storm water retention.
