Reed-Custer School Board candidates lay out their plans

There are four candidates vying for three open seats on the Reed-Custer Board of Education in next week’s consolidated election. Each seat is a 4-year term on the board.

The Braidwood Journal asked each of those candidates a variety of questions on fiscal responsibility, plans to ensure student success for all students, including those with special needs, and teacher retention.

The candidates' answers to those questions are listed below in the order they appear on the ballot.

Election day is April 4.

Reed-Custer approves tentative budget

The Reed-Custer School Board has approved the tentative budget for the 2023 fiscal year (FY23), which began on July 1.

On Aug. 17, the members of the board of education took a look at the proposal before placing it on file for public review for the next month.

The budget represents $29 million in expenditures district wide for the 2022-2023 school year.

Reed-Custer kicks off talks on possible campus daycare

The Reed-Custer School District is eyeing the possibility of a daycare on campus to serve teachers and staff who struggle with child care options.

On March 14, Superintendent Mark Mitchell presented the idea to members of the board of education, as the kick-off for discussions on whether such a program would be feasible in the district.

RC District aims high for student achievement

The Reed-Custer School District is setting some strong goals for its students, an effort directly aimed at ensuring academic success.

On March 14, Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning Danielle Valiente told members of the board of education that more data continues to emerge from standardized testing for the students, specifically for the winter Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) results.

RCHS students plan for college and career paths

Students at Reed-Custer High School are digging deep to figure out their next steps after they leave high school.

On Sept. 15, Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning Danielle Valiente updated the board of education on the Naviance program—the new college and career platform at the high school.

The program provides students and staff with tools to help assess and develop essential competencies that will help those students be successful after high school.

Reed-Custer School Board approves fund transfer for cafeteria project

The Reed-Custer School Board unanimously approved all action items during the regular meeting Jan. 20 including the transfer of $700,000 from the educational fund to help pay for the new high school cafeteria.

It took two resolutions to properly move the money into the right account. The first resolution transferred the $700,000 into the Operations and Maintenance Fund; a second resolution then moved it into the Capital Projects Fund.

District to tweak guidelines for social media groups

The Reed-Custer School Board will consider a change to district policies with regard to how teachers and staff use social media to represent the school.

On Jan. 16, superintendent Mark Mitchell presented a draft of a change to the district’s policy on usage and conduct related to social media and personal technology. The change would add language designed to help district administrators keep up with the multitude of social media pages that serve as information centers for various groups, clubs, sports and activities.
