FDA Authorizes Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine for Emergency Use in Adolescents

On Monday, May 10, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration expanded the emergency use authorization (EUA) for the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine for the prevention of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) to include adolescents 12 through 15 years of age. The FDA amended the EUA originally issued on Dec. 11, 2020 for administration in individuals 16 years of age and older.

Will County vaccine clinics will continue to operate as scheduled

After the CDC and FDA pressed the pause button on the use of the Johnson & Johnson one-dose vaccine for COVID-19, health department officials in Will County said that while they’ll follow suit, the difference will be minimal.

The Will County Health Department announced on Tuesday they would follow federal and state health agencies recommendation to immediately pause the use of Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

Wilmington Library offering assistance in registering for vaccine

The Wilmington Public Library District is offering assistance to anyone who wishes to register with the Will County Health Department to receive the COVID-19 vaccine shot.

Library Director Maria Meachum said anyone who doesn’t have a computer or is hesitant to apply online can call the library and staff members will step them through the process.

Vaccine doses set to increase with third option available

The state of Illinois is expected to receive thousands of doses of the new Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine on Wednesday, March 3.

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) reported this week that 83,000 doses of the new vaccine, which received emergency authorization from the FDA late Friday, is expected to be shipped out primarily to mass vaccination sites in the state. The remaining doses will be shipped to other providers across the state.

Will County remains in Phase 4 of the state’s Restore Illinois plans, with local businesses opened up to partial capacity while masking and social distancing remain the norm.

Vaccinations for COVID-19 are also ramping up in the state. Based on CDC guidelines, the state of Illinois is currently in Phase 1B of vaccination distribution. In this phase, people age 65 and older, frontline workers, and inmates are all eligible for the vaccine.

Those frontline workers include first responders, grocery store workers, and educators.
