Centennial hype hits Route 66

As Route 66 prepares to celebrate its 100th anniversary, longtime Wilmington historian John Weiss is already seeing the results of years of planning.
Weiss, widely known throughout the region for his decades of work promoting the Mother Road, said the buildup to the centennial has brought travelers earlier than usual — and from far beyond the United States.

Counterfeits and counterfeiters, good and bad

Recently the Will County Historical Society was the victim of a scheme which sent out fraudulent checks from its account amounting to tens of thousands of dollars. Luckily it was caught in time and the Society only had the job of shutting down one account and opening another
Because of technology this problem has only gotten worse. But there were also schemers back in the day. Today we look at counterfeits and those who are involved.

Wilmington leaders to make list for potential road projects

The city of Wilmington is working on local road work plans, with ideas starting to take shape for upcoming Motor Fuel Tax (MFT) projects.

The city’s water, sewer, streets and alleys committee met on April 15. During the meeting, which was conducted over Zoom, members presented some ideas to help formulate a “wish list” for MFT projects.
MFT funds are monies collected at the gas pump by the state, then returned to municipalities for road projects. The projects must fall under certain conditions as established by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT).

Wilmington leaders see the positive in pandemic response

Day-to-day life has changed across the country due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and Wilmington is no different.

This week, the Will County Health Department announced that so far, seven cases of the novel coronavirus had been diagnosed in the 60481 area code.

According to the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), cases in the state of Illinois have topped 23,000, with more than 860 deaths.
