Wilmington District 209-U looks ahead, but planning still difficult

While the end of the school year was an unusual one for school districts across the country, inside those institutions, teachers and administrators are still carrying on with planning for what comes next.

One event that has a ready date — high school graduation.

On Monday, High School Principal Scott Maupin told members of the 209-U Board of Education that an outdoor graduation will take place on Saturday, June 27, at 10 a.m.

In-school learning scrapped for remainder of year

Hope that students would be able to return to their classrooms this academic school year were dashed late last week, as Gov. JB Pritzker announced Friday that Illinois’ public and private schools will remain shuttered for the rest of the school year.

The move means the state’s 2 million K-12 students will finish up the year via remote learning.

Wilmington 209-U Superintendent Dr. Matt Swick informed students and their families on Friday via email.

Wilmington District 209-U amends transportation agreement

Wilmington School District 209-U has altered its transportation agreement with Illinois Central School Bus LLC, following suit with other districts to help pay bus drivers while remote learning is in place during the stay-at-home order during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The board approved the agreement during its regular meeting on April 13, where five members attended via the videoconferencing platform Zoom, while the remaining two members and administration attended in person in the boardroom, seated at least six feet apart.

Illinois schools to remain closed for academic year

Illinois students will not return to their classrooms for the remainder of the school year.

Gov. JB Pritzker announced on April 17 that schools will remain shuttered for the rest of the academic year, and remote learning will continue for all pre-k through 12th grade students.

“I’ve said time and time again, our decisions must follow the science, and the science says our students can’t go back to their normal routine this school year,” Pritzker said.
