Record holders to face off during Coalers vs. Cats

Dark green, white and gold. Purple and white. Babe's Tap vs Hayden's Crossing, Landin Benson vs Kyle Farrell.
The latter both recently became their respective school's all-time leading rusher and Friday is the final time the two will square off on the gridiron.
Wilmington has won 19 straight games and is averaging 45.3 points per game while allowing only 10.2.
Coal City has won five straight and is also averaging 45.3 ppg while allowing 9.3.

Wildcats stay in 2A, Coalers #8 in 4A football playoffs

For the third straight year Wilmington will play in the class 2A football playoffs while Coal City with battle in class 4A.

The Wildcats were teetering between 2A and 3A before getting help Saturday afternoon when a game between two Chicago schools with 4-4 records ended up being won by the school with the bigger enrollment. That guaranteed the ‘Cats the #5 seed in the 2A north bracket which includes four undefeated schools.

First round state bodes well for 11 of 21 area wrestlers

Eleven area wrestlers won during the first round of the IHSA Class 1A finals.

Coal City had eight of 14 state qualifiers win their preliminary match on Thursday, advancing to the quarterfinals on Friday. Winning were Brody Widlowski (113), Aiden Kenney (120), Jake Piatak (132), Buddy Widlowski (138), Mataeo Blessing (145), Derek Carlson (170), Braiden Young (182) and Joey Breneman (195).

'Cats, Coalers win, Comets clipped

Wilmington's varsity football team avoided a three-peat of losses Friday night, scoring 27 second-half points to defeat Sandwich 41-19.

The Wildcats (2-2) racked up 449 yards of total offense, double the output by the hosting Indians, as three of their six touchdowns were runs or 27 yards or more, a sign that Wilmington may be playing more characteristic football with break-away gains.

Friday night football brought one victory and a pair of losses for three area teams.

Wilmington scored 12 unanswered points in the final quarter to win 39-20 at Manteno; Coal City gave powerhouse Morris a scare until the very end losing 21-7; and Reed-Custer was only one touchdown away in the third quarter before falling to Fieldcrest 34-20.
