      The Unit 1 School District is taking a bold step in its effort to address the academic and social/emotional needs of its at-risk students.
    Coaler Pride Academy, an in-district intervention program, is set to welcome its first students with the start of the 2018-2019 school year.

School board: Let the voters decide on tax

The Reed-Custer School District may soon join other districts in the county in asking voters to make a decision on a new funding tax.

In June, members of the Board of Education held a brief discussion on the proposed Will County Schools Facilities Sales Tax.

All counties in the state except Cook County can impose a tax, from which the revenue generated can be exclusively used for “school facility purposes” as defined in the statute.

Vegetable farmer sees stellar season in Custer Park

“There’s always something to learn."

With that attitude, Dan Perkins has cultivated his land along Zilm Road in Custer Park into a large vegetable farm, which is seeing a successful year in 2018.

Perkins, a retired carpenter who purchased his property six years ago, has been growing vegetables and selling them at markets most of his life.

But now, his one-time hobby has turned into a day-to-day way of life, with more than three of his seven acres dedicated to growing a variety of fresh vegetables.

New center services local food pantries

Food pantries rely on a variety of funding and donation mechanisms to fill their shelves. This summer, receiving those goods has become somewhat easier for local pantries, with the opening of the new Northern Illinois Food Bank South Suburban Center in Joliet.

The center opened in a new warehouse facility on Larkin Avenue in May, to address a growing need.

The Braidwood Lions are getting ready to deck the halls — In July.

The final touches are being put on the 37th Annual Braidwood Lions Club Summerfest, set for July 19 through 22 at Braidwood’s Old Smokey City Park.

The theme for this year’s festival is “Christmas is July.” Summerfest will once again feature four days full of fun, entertainment, and carnival rides for the entire family.

Des Plaines River drowning victim identified

    The body of a man who drowned in the Des Plaines River near Wilmington Sunday was recovered Tuesday morning, about one mile from where he was last seen.
    He has been identified as Baldur Kirsch, 47, of Minooka.
    The Channahon Fire Protection District responded Sunday, July 8, at 6:52 p.m. to a report of a male who jumped off a recreational boat into the Des Plaines River, about one-half mile west of Harborside Marina, and never surfaced.

Scouts selling lunch on Sunday

    It’s time to kick-off the bi-annual Boy Scout bratwurst fundraiser and it starts Sunday, July 8 with a bratwurst lunch.
    The community is invited to join scouts from Troop 466 and Pack 466 for lunch. Scouts will be selling bratwurst lunches from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the southeast corner of South Broadway and Division Street.

Diamond welcomes new commissioner

When the mayor of Diamond put out the call for a resident to fill a vacant seat on the Village Board, Denise Brown answered.
Saying she felt it would be something new and interesting, Brown submitted her name, and on June 26 was appointed as the town's finance commissioner. She replaces Carolyn Wilson, who resigned last month.
“I believe she will be an asset to the village and we are thrilled to have her,” Mayor Terry Kernc said in announcing Brown's appointment.

Mistaken property taxes collected from Area Club

     An annexation agreement between the Coal City Area Club and village of Coal City called for an abatement of municipal property tax, but the village has mistakenly collected over $30,000 in payments.
    The recreation club agreed to annex  a 300-foot wide strip of property along Dresden Road into the village back in 2014. Coal City needed the land to extend sewer service to the Prairie Oak Estates Subdivision.
    A 20-year abatement of taxes was included in the terms of the agreement, but the club has been unknowingly paying the tax since 2014.

Theatre workshop students to take the stage

Students taking part in a two-week youth theatre workshop invite the community to see what they've been working on at a showcase performance on Friday, July 6.
Small Town Theatrics, a community theatre company based in Coal City, with assistance from the Coal City High School Drama Club is hosting the workshop that has been attended by over 40 students in fourth to ninth grades.
