City exploring Kankakee Street water main work

    The Wilmington City Council last week tasked its engineer with developing a plan to replace the inadequate 4-inch water main on Kankakee Street from Baltimore to Canal Street.
    “Kankakee Street has an old 4-inch line, and there are three hydrants that don’t have enough pressure to them, they’re bagged, they’re not worth using,” said Mayor Roy Strong.
    “So we’re going to go back to Route 53, and make another tap and run a 6-inch main all the way down to near the tracks, three blocks, and install new hydrants where the ones aren’t working.”

RCHS graduates Emily Wolf and Cory McGregor were seated at the head of the class in 2018.

Cory took home the honor of this year’s Salutatorian, while Emily is the Class of 2018 Valedictorian.

During graduation, the pair spoke to their fellow graduates about the years they’ve spent together, and what comes next.

Cory said their time together in a smaller district in a small town has left a positive, lifelong impression on him.

RCHS grads face a future of choices, opportunities

Comet seniors took their last stroll through the halls of Reed-Custer High School on Sunday, May 20, as the 125 graduates of the Class of 2018 received their high school diplomas.

With all the usual pomp and circumstance, and cooler than usual temperatures making for a comfortable afternoon inside the RCHS gymnasium, the graduates were honored for their four years of academic success.

Superintendent Mark Mitchell told the graduates it had been an honor to watch them grow from feisty fifth graders to young men and women.

Fed up with overgrown exit ramps

A local business owner says he’s fed up with what he sees when he comes home to Braidwood off Interstate 55.

On May 8, Bob Jones, owner of Joneseez on Kennedy Road, said he is sick of the city’s interstate on and off ramps, which he said are actively turning people off from heading into town. Jones directed his comments to members of the City

Council during a regular meeting of the mayor and commissioners.

     Local law enforcement officers were called to Coal City Middle School on Tuesday to investigate an alleged threat of violence.
    The Unit 1 School District released the following statement at 2:15 p.m.

     On Sunday, Carter Copes and his fellow classmates will depart Coal City High School with more than a diploma in their hand.
    Each member of the class of 2018 will leave high school ready to embark on the next phase of life whether its pursuing a degree, entering the workforce or enlisting in the armed services.
    “CCHS has taught me a lot about hard work, leadership, persistence and perseverance,” said Copes, salutatorian of the class.
