Annual report outlines district demographics, performance

     Each year the Illinois State Board of Education releases its annual report card outlining the academic progress of students in every public school, but it goes beyond test scores to show how schools stack up across the state.
    In December, the Unit 1 School District released its annual state assessment report showing how students in third to eighth grade did on the Partnership for Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) exam, as well as the scores posted by the class of 2018 on the SAT exam.

    They brought their tractors and implements, and even old military vehicles out of winter storage, and came from as far away as Homer Glen to protest a project that threatens more than 2,000 acres of prime farmland in Jackson Township.
    Just hours before the Elwood Planning and Zoning Commission was scheduled to reconvene it’s hearing on the controversial NorthPoint Development project on Jan. 11, nearly 75 farmers and veterans, with dozens of trucks and tractors, lined up on Coldwater Road to parade in protest of the development of the proposed warehousing facility.

Officials want to replace park restrooms

    Wilmington residents are proud of their island parks, and this year, city officials hope to make the properties live up to residents’ expectations. Last week, they discussed construction of permanent restrooms and removal of dead and dying trees.
    Mayor Roy Strong is pushing to replace the restrooms in both parks.
    “I’d like to start on both, I dont’ think it would be that hard,” he commented at the council’s Grounds and Buildings Committee meeting last week.

Wait for road repairs coming to an end

    The list of streets to be repaired in the next round of pavement work has changed little since it was introduced early last year, and Wilmington officials are hoping that in the next couple of months the city will have enough in the bank to seek bids for a long list of improvements.

Just one month after passing an ordinance governing how local games of chance are governed, the city of Braidwood has already made an amendment to the ordinance, to correct an issue that was putting some organizations in a tough spot.

Winter frustrates chip seal road issues

Braidwood’s mayor has said his piece on the controversial tar and chip road program the city engaged in last fall.

But, there are still questions and complaints from residents, some upset now that winter road conditions have spread the top layer of unfinished roads into yards and gutters.

After last week’s snow event, residents began to send photos of their streets to The Braidwood Journal, including shots of gravel spread by snow plows into yards and around gutters.

Industrial Tech students expand industry knowledge

As the second semester gets into full swing, the students of the Industrial Technology department at Reed-Custer High School continues to learn not just though hands-on activities, but by way of industry support.

Over the past few months, the department has gained several more industry supporters, as students learn real life applications for their education.

Jakub Stachurski of Milesi Wood Coatings visited students in the first semester, giving a lecture and demonstration about state of the art industrial wood finish coatings to all of the Industrial Technology classes.

Nagel in the spotlight for January

The Reed-Custer High School Senior Spotlight winner for the month of January is Gabe Nagel.

Gabe is the son of Philip and Joanna Nagel.

During his high school career, Gabe was involved in Scholastic Bowl, WYSE, Soccer, Wrestling, and Track. He was also a Writing Center tutor and a two-time Student of the Month.

Gabe’s teachers said he’s a great student, who brings positive energy to both school work and sports.

Mrs. Bugg called Gabe the most responsible, empathetic, mature person in the whole building.

Sidewalks slated for ADA upgrade

A few of Braidwood’s pedestrian walkways are slated for improvements by the state on Illinois.

On Jan. 9, members of the City Council signed off on a letter of understanding with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), to maintain walkways that IDOT intends to install this year.

Farmer’s market returning for another season

    Locally sourced produce and handcrafted items are the centerpiece of the village of Coal City’s farmer’s market, and the concept will be expanded as Market Fresh on Broadway enters its third season.
    The farmer’s market committee gathered last week to begin planning for the 2018 season. The first order of business was to set market dates.
    Once again, the markets will be held in Campbell Memorial Park. This year they will run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the following Saturdays—July 21, August 4 and 18 and September 1 and 15.
