Weight limit change will affect trucks at 113

Trucks passing through the area will need to find a new way around if they need to pass over I-55 at Route 113.
The state has now banned overweight trucks from passing over the bridge that connects Braidwood to Diamond.
A letter sent in November from the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) to both the village of Diamond and the city of Braidwood noted that due to structural deficiencies identified at the bridge carrying Route 113 over I-55, IDOT will now pose weight restrictions on the structure.

Each year fires occurring during the holiday season claim the lives of over 400 Americans, injure 1,650 more, and cause over $990 million in damage. Once again this year the Coal City Fire Protection District is asking residents to help it Keep the Wreath Red.

     Grundy County Republican voters will head to the polls in March 2018 to nominate a candidate for sheriff.
    Republicans Jason Flanders of Morris, and Ken Briley of Minooka, filed petitions seeking their party’s nomination to run for Grundy County Sheriff. The primary winner will face incumbent Sheriff Kevin Callahan in November 2018.

Help for the holidays

    Once again the people of Coal City has come together to make the holiday season brighter for families in need.
    The community food and gift distribution by the Coal City Food Pantry will assist 115 families, 320 people in all—210 adults and 110 children.
    The annual holiday food and gift distribution is Saturday, Dec. 9, so volunteers gathered this week to sort and pack donations collected during the annual door-to-door food drive sponsored by Cub Scout Pack 466.

Braidwood lights up the Holidays!

It was a fun night of Christmas cheer, music, lights, and a visit with Santa himself in Braidwood, part of this year's annual holiday parade and visit with Santa.

Braedan Belcher, who received a heart transplant in 2016, helped Mayor Jim Vehrs light up this year’s city tree during the annual lighting on Dec. 2, and later served as grand marshal to the parade.

This year’s visit with Santa was held at the brand new Reed-Custer Elementary School.

Council approves raffle ordinance

Want to buy a chance in Braidwood?

Before you get a chance to be a big winner, someone will have to buy a permit.

On Nov. 28, the members of the Braidwood City Council approved a new ordinance, allowing for the licensing and regulating of raffles within the city limits.

It’s a measure that’s being drawn up and passed in municipalities throughout the region, following a problematic raffle over the summer in Grundy County.

Frieders in the spotlight for December

The Reed-Custer High School Senior Spotlight winner for the month of December is Brodie Frieders.

Brodie is the son of Jeff and Connie Frieders.

During his high school career, Brodie has been part of Math Team, Scholastic Bowl, WYSE, choir, football, and track. He was also a Student of the Month and an ACE winner.

Brodie’s teachers said he’s a natural leader.

Roads still hot topic around town

The saga of Braidwood’s tar and chip roads doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon.

On Nov. 28, Braidwood resident Kent Lee, who saw his road replaced with tar and chip this fall, again approached members of the city council looking for clarification on the process of approving the roadwork

City approves slight bump up in tax levy

The city of Braidwood has determined just what they plan to ask the county for when it comes to collecting tax dollars.

On Nov. 28, members of the City Council approved a resolution approving the 2017 tax levy estimate.

The total estimate 2017 levy, paid in 2018, is $1.62 million, up just slightly from last year’s $1.6 million.

The city is required by law to submit the levy to the county by the last Tuesday in December, but will not receive full taxing information from the county until spring.

Ullrich hustles to the finish line

    As the hustle and bustle of the holiday season gets underway, a different kind of hustle was taking place in Coal City over the weekend.
    The first annual Holiday Hustle 5K stepped off on Sunday, Nov. 26, with 111 registered participants hitting the pavement for a cause, the Coal City Backpack Program.
