Mayor defends tar and chip roads

Residents continue to fuss over road maintenance in Braidwood, worried that the city’s plan to tar and chip some roads will come with negative consequences for cars, neighborhoods and home values.

But Braidwood’s mayor is urging patience, telling the public that the tar and chip roads will not just work out well in the long run, but will save the city a lot of cash.

Students chill out for a good cause

Students at Reed-Custer High School spent some time getting firsthand experience on what it’s like to live without food or shelter.

Members of the RCHS chapter of the  Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) worked this fall collecting funds and food for the needy, then taking a night to live in someone else’s shoes.

New Cermak Road subdivision approved

A new subdivision is set for west Cermak Road, after revisions to an existing plat were approved by members of the Braidwood City Council.

On Oct. 24, the council approved a revised plat for the Caryn Reserve subdivision, between Division and English Streets.

The move makes changes to a previous plat already approved at the site, by allowing a variance for lot width and reducing the number of lots inside the subdivision.

Real Estate developer Mike Guinta of Plainfield is the land owner.

Town Hall meeting set for Custer Fire District

The fire house along Route 113 in Custer Park has been out of business for years, since the fire protection district decided to contract for fire and ambulance services with Braidwood.

But another meeting for the district is on the horizon. The purpose of that meeting — what comes next.

The Custer Township Fire Protection District will hold a town hall meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m., at the Custer Township Hall.

For as long as her parents can remember, Madelyn Spiewak has been interested in dinosaurs. If asked, the 8-year-old will tell you she specifically finds the Tyrannosaurus Rex and Velociraptor the most interesting of the prehistoric reptiles.

Lead in the water

During required testing the village of Coal City learned a handful of residences have lead in their water.
The village provides water and sanitary sewer services for all of its community, as well as water to neighboring Carbon Hill.  The village has a licensed water utility operator who ensures compliance with all required Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards for safe drinking water.  
Coal City continues to comply with all of its testing requirements on a monthly basis.  

Trustees review draft dispatching agreement

A draft intergovernmental agreement for dispatch services was presented to the Coal City Village Board for its review.
Prepared by the Grundy County Emergency Telephone System Board (ETSB) the agreement outlines the service terms and cost for each member agency receiving telecommunication services through ETSB.
The village of Coal City is set to see a 17 percent reduction in its annual dispatching costs with the new agreement. The amount to be paid in the coming year is $72,884.

    If you’re going to Time’s Square for New Year’s Eve, you get as close to the ball drop as possible. If Halloween is your thing, there’s no better place to experience it than “Witch City,” Salem, Massachusetts.
    Visiting Salem during the bewitching month is something Terry Thomas has always wanted to do, a bucket list item.
    “I wanted to go on Halloween, I thought it would be kind of cool — and it is,” Thomas said Tuesday, after a four-day weekend with friend Cindy Koschetz in the thriving seaport made famous by its 1692 witch trials.

    Laney Cherveny is certain about what she saw last Thursday near the city limits. What she doesn’t know is how many other people may have seen it too.
    She was driving north on Kankakee Street approaching New River Road at 10 a.m. when a car in front of her suddenly slowed.

County to hold public hearing on Wesley roads

    Will County Director of Transportation Jeff Ronaldson will preside over a public hearing Monday concerning the maintenance of Wesley Township roads.
    Nearly 40 residents of the rural township signed a petition stating they feel their roads aren’t being maintained, and asking Ronaldson for relief. The roads named in the petition include Warner Bridge, Town Line, Symerton, Martin Long, Hazelton, Ballou, Indian Trail, Donohue, Goodwin, Danielson, Hintze, Thornton Lane, Thornton, Mary Byron and Byron roads.
