Comets, ‘Cats to play into regional, Coal City gets a bye in Beecher

It’s playoff time for three area softball teams starting Monday.
The Wilmington Wildcats, who drew the sixth seed and the Reed-Custer Comets (5) will be in the Manteno Regional together.
The Lady ‘Cats (7-7, 5-4) were third in the Illinois Central Eight Conference standings.
They draw Momence (9-5, 8-3) who finished third in their River Valley Conference in the first of two play in games which will be held on Monday.

The baseball playoffs for the Wildcats, Comets and Coalers start Monday.
The Wilmington Wildcats (8-10, 3-7) who finished sixth in the Illinois Central Eight and the Reed-Custer Comets (12-7, 8-5) who finished third in the ICE will be in the same regional together.
The ‘Cats will have to play into the Braidwood (Reed-Custer) Regional as they will host the 10 seed, Herscher on Monday at 4:30 p.m.

Lady Comets rally but Bulldogs too tough to beat

The Reed-Custer softball team came close but just fell short in a 6-3 loss to Streator on Monday.
Streator got the ball rolling to take a 2-0 lead in the first.
The Lady Comets tied the game with two of their own in the third inning.
After singling to begin the inning, both Mya Beard and Halie LaGrange came home to score on an errant throw from the Bulldog second basemen.
The Comets took a 3-1 lead with a run in the fourth before Streator would go on a 5-0 run to win the ballgame.

The Reed-Custer baseball team scored first but couldn’t keep up with Streator in a 5-1 loss on Monday.
The Comets got the game started a bases loaded walk to make it 1-0.
After that, the bats went quiet as they would muster just three hits overall and seven baserunners.
Streator plated a run in the first to tie it at 1-1. Then, they took the lead and kept it with four unanswered which led to the win.

Comets, ‘Cats, Coalers preparing for Regional

The playoffs for area girls soccer teams start Friday.
Coal City (7-8, 3-3) will begin the Braidwood (Reed-Custer) Regional on the road in Beecher (5-7-1, 4-2). They’ll battle the six seed, Beecher, and if they win, they will move on to get another chance at Peotone on Tuesday, May 10.
The Coalers have beaten both Beecher (1-0) and Peotone (1-0, 4-3) during the regular season so if they get past Beecher, they’ll be ready to play Peotone (7-5-1, 4-2) again.

Comets fall to Coalers in ICE conference battle

The Reed-Custer baseball team struggled to string things together against Coal City ace Abram Wills in a 9-0 loss on Monday.
The game looked like it was going to be a pitcher’s match over the first inning as Jake McPherson retired the Comets giving up just a walk in the first inning and Wills allowed a couple hits but did the same to keep the Comets from taking the lead.

Lady Comets fall behind early in loss to Coalers

The Reed-Custer softball team took one on the chin against the Lady Coalers in a 13-1 loss on Monday.
Coal City staked themselves to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and added another three unanswered runs in the fourth and fifth to take a 7-0 lead before the Comets were able to answer.

Lady Comets edge Streator

The Reed-Custer girls soccer team tied with Streator 1-1 and then won a 3-2 shootout in overtime on Thursday.
Brooklyn Harding scored the goal in regulation with an assist from Caelan Cole. Hannah Budick knocked through the game-winner.
Maggie Dockery had 11 saves in goal.
The Lady Comets (6-3, 2-1) who are fourth in the Illinois Central Eight Conference, will host Coal City for senior night on Friday and will head to Chicago Christian on Monday.

McPherson out-pitches Humphries, Comets edge ‘Cats 1-0

by shawn long Sports writer Reed-Custer’s Jake McPherson won the pitching duel against Wilmington’s Kaden Humphries on Monday to help his ballclub win 1-0 at Wilmington McPherson went the distance, giving up just two hits while fanning nine in the win. He out-dualed Humphries who lasted 6.2 innings, giving up an unearned run on three hits while fanning nine and walking one. “It was a good game,” said McPherson. “It felt good to win and I took care of business on my end and Kaden took care of it on his end. I was a little nervous.

Lady Comets trail early to hard-hitting ‘Cats

The Reed-Custer softball team was unable to rally in an 18-6 loss to Wilmington on Monday.
The Comets fell behind 8-0 as Wilmington went to work scoring eight runs in the first two innings.
The Lady Comets responded with four unanswered runs in the next two innings to cut into the 8-4 lead. The ‘Cats scored another run in the bottom half and it was a 9-4 game.
