Comets playing better, drop three

    Reed-Custer’s varsity boys soccer team put up a good fight on Saturday, but  wound up with a loss to Bishop McNamara, 3-2.
    The Comets came out a little sluggish at the start of the first half, but eventually found their rhythm, and wound up tied at halftime, 1-1.
    Christian Williams recorded his first goal of the day off a free kick outside the box, hitting the top right corner of the goal.
    Both teams traded one goal a piece in the second half as well, with Austin Termaine drawing a foul in the box for a penalty kick, which Williams scored.

Will home be where the Comets win?

    There’s no place like home! And Comet fans are hoping the home field serves as an advantage when the    Reed-Custer varsity football team hosts Peotone Friday for the first home game of the season.
    The winless Comets will have their work cut out for them as Peotone arrives with a 2-0 record. Also, this is the week when conference games begin and nothing would be finer than to upset the Blue Devils and stake a claim for the I-8 Small division.

Lady Comets remain unbeaten

    The Reed-Custer varsity volleyball team is at full steam, picking up another win on Thursday, this time over Serena in two games, 25-14, 15-19.
    The Lady Comets (4-0 overall) were led by Madelyn Alton, who had an awesome defensive game with 17 digs and six aces. She also added three kills.
    Emily Wolf tacked on 18 digs of her own, along with three kills and one ace.
    The junior varsity team also picked up a win in two games, 25-20, 25-21.
    The team as a whole had an unbelievable 42 digs.

Blue Devils too hot for the Comets

    The Reed-Custer varsity boys soccer team traveled to Peotone on Thursday where they faced the red-hot Blue Devils
    The Comets (0-7 overall, 0-3 conference) spent most of their time playing defense as the Blue Devils won it 8-0.
    Peotone peppered goalkeeper Nathan Minuth all game, putting 20 shots on goal, with Minuth earning 12 saves through the two halves.
    Reed-Custer managed just three shots on goal, as they were shutout in the conference game.

Comets headed to Clinton

    Reed-Custer is hoping history repeats itself Friday when they travel to Clinton, a team they defeated last year, 56-27.
    The Comets dominated the 4A team la year ago without knowing exactly what to expect.
    However, just like the previous year, Reed-Custer will still not have much knowledge about the opposition heading into Friday.

Lady Comets make a habit of winning

    It was a close call during Thursday’s match against Dwight, but the Lady Comet varsity volleyball team pulled off the win after three games.
    Reed-Custer dropped the first game by getting their score doubled, 25-12, but rallied back in the following two to win, 25-17, 25-21.
    “We had as many aces (10) as missed serves,” said R-C coach Kelly Van Duyne. “The  team stepped it up both offensively and defensively though.”

Comet kickers looking for more offense

    Reed-Custer’s varsity boys soccer team remains in search of a win as they wound up with three losses during their competition in the annual Somonauk Tournament.
    The Comets (0-5 overall) recorded just one goal through the three games, as Christian Williams scored on a penalty kick in the opening round against Aurora Central.
    Reed-Custer fell to the Aurora team, 6-1, and wound up losing the following two games against Somonauk (6-0) and Plano (9-0).
    Nathan Minuth accumulated 19 saves through the tournament.

Comets run into a Coaler tempest

REED-CUSTER quarterback Josh Loomis heads off the field after going three-and-out during the Comets' season opener at Coal City on Friday. The Comet offense didn't quite get clicking as they reached the Coaler side of the field during only two possessions. Reed-Custer lost 40-0 and will be looking to regroup for Week 2 when they will travel to Clinton on Friday.

Comets ready to put their talent on the field

    Reed-Custer’s varsity football team had its best record in seven years during the 2016 campaign. Even though they didn’t make the playoffs, their 3-6 season resulted in optimism for players and coaches as they knew much of their talent would be returning in 2017.
    Head coach Mark Wolf, entering his fourth year, is bent on getting his Comets into the  playoffs and it all starts Friday when the guys in gold open at Coal City.

Youngsters vie to be the fastest on two wheels

    While most local youngsters spent the weekend gearing up junior football,  Patrick Osipavicius Jr., from Braidwood, got dirty in a different way.
    He zoomed around a dirt track, accelerating through jumps and ditches, out to claim first place.
    “I like hitting all the big jumps and going fast,” said the 7-year-old racer before pushing off on his motor bike Friday night in a race. “Racing dirt bikes, they need to know that it is the hardest sport around, and it is really fun to ride dirt bikes. That is about it.”
