Coalers recover quickly by winning next three matches

The Coal City tennis team kept cruising with a 5-0 shutout of Providence Catholic on Thursday.
Tyler Johnson was great to begin No. 1 singles as he flew past James Tyler, 6-3, 6-0 to give the Coalers the 1-0 lead.
Levi Counterman followed suit with a dominating victory over Logan Healy, 6-0, 6-1.
Cristofono Ferrara-Alex Gernenz proved they were the best pair to extend Coal City’s lead as they worked a 6-2 victory over John O’Connor-Jordan Moor in No. 1 Doubles.

Softball pairings favorable for teams with higher seed

Pairings and seeding for the 2A softball regionals have been announced and it looks as though Coal City and Reed-Custer will have to get through #1 seeded Seneca in order to advance.
New this year, after seasons were canceled in 2020, is teams with the higher seed will get to host during the regional and sectional rounds.
The Super-Sectional has been designated at Milliken U. in Decatur and the finals in Peoria.
Reed-Custer (#9) and Coal City (#5) are in the five-team Regional C that also includes Seneca (#1), Streator (#4 Woodlawn) and Momence (#8).

Higher seed will have value during the playoffs

Just how significant are the playoff seeds for the IHSA state baseball playoffs this year? They’ll mean everything if you’re a team who plays better at home.
Because after a year of no baseball whatsoever due to the pandemic, the IHSA is cautiously holding a post-season series under new conditions.
No one team will host a regional or sectional tournament like in past years. Instead, the teams with the higher seed will host until the Super-Sectional is played at Bloomington.

Cooper wants to learn first, be a game-breaker second year as a Maverick

Coal City’s Asa Cooper will be taking his speed and athleticism to the next level, signing a letter of intent to play football at Minnesota State University in Mankato, MN,
Cooper was considering other schools but the two finalists were Minnesota State and the University of Indianapolis,. He chose Minnesota State because it was more cost effective and had a better football program.

Coaler matmen dismantle Manteno, Peotone

The Coal City matmen captured big victories over Peotone and Manteno on Friday.
They started with a 48-13 win over Peotone, thanks to four pins, three major decisions and two forfeits.
The Coalers (6-3) used that momentum right through Manteno, picking up five forfeits, three pins and two major decisions to win 56-16.
The Coaler grapplers split the dual team match against Moline and Providence Catholic on Wednesday.

The Coal City baseball team got an excellent effort from freshmen Caden Kuder, who pitched a 10-0 shutout against Wilmington.
Kuder was terrific on Monday as he went 5.0 innings, giving up just an infield singles while fanning seven and walking one. He earned his first win as a varsity starter in his second overall start.

The Coal City softball team lost to Wilmington 13-12 on Monday in a game that went down to the wire.
The Lady Coalers (6-6) started out slow as they were trailing by four runs in the second before their bats came alive.

The Coal City softball team won their fifth consecutive game on Monday, defeating Peotone 11-5.
Before the game, the Coalers were in a two-way tie with Herscher for the conference but have since captured the top spot in the ICE conference. Senior catcher Natalie Teague says it’s a great feeling to have such a talented team her final year.

Coaler boys beat Manteno, girls just short

The Coal City boys track team was up to speed during its first track meet of the season against Manteno, winning 68-46.
Asa Cooper placed first in the long jump (19’8), the triple jump (40’8.5) and the 100 meter dash (11.7) to lead the boys team. His 40’8.5” triple jump was a personal record for Cooper. He also helped the 4x100 relay of him, Colten Sztapka, Ryland Megyeri and Christian Micetich place first with a time of 49.4.

What would have happened if the Coal City football team had four more games to play in their season?
Would the one-loss Coalers have made the playoffs for the 10th straight season? The Coal City football program and the ICE will never know because with only five games on the schedule, this season goes down with an asterisk.
