JV Warriors storm out of the gate to 2-0 start

The Coal City Middle seventh grade boys basketball team got their second victory of the season Thursday night by knocking off Gardner-South Wilmington, 25 - 12.
“The team played hard, but we need to do a better job of finishing around the basket,” said coach Harlan Kennel. “Our defense is getting better each game and the players are getting smarter with the ball. We will have two challenging games coming up next week.”
Gavin Beger & Gavin Parks led the Warriors with six points apiece.

JV Lady Coalers edged by Blue Devils

On Thursday, the Coal City Fresh/Soph girls basketball team was edged by Peotone 33-32 in an extremely close game.
Fresh/soph girls basketball coach Brad Boresi noted they had their opportunities but they just couldn’t come through.
"We had a couple chances at the end to win the game, but our shots just didn't fall,” said Boresi. “The girls played hard and did a good job executing our stuff most of the night."
Makayla Henline took the lead with 12 points.

Lady Coalers drop road opener

The Coal City girls basketball squad began its season with a 46-22 loss to Streator on the road Monday. They fell victim to a very strong defense who limited them to single digits in each quarter.
The Lady Coalers were still getting loose when the Bulldogs put together a 25-8 run to grab a strong halftime advantage.
Coal City had trouble limiting Streator, who scored another 13 points to advance their lead to 38-10. They were held to just five points in the third.

Schools giving Coaler fans a way to see games live

Coal City High School is taking extraordinary measures to make sure Coaler fans get the opportunity to watch all home sporting events including basketball games which start this week.
That comes despite restrictions by the state that says no more than 50 fans can be in the high school gym at one time.
Instead, the school is making sure games will be presented live via the internet so even grandma and grandpa can watch the action from the safety of their home.

IHSA fine tunes mitigations so JV football will be able to play

The Illinois High School Association had their monthly board meeting Monday, changing the ruling on non varsity contests for football and also changed how playoffs would be conducted for golf and tennis in the fall.
Freshmen and JV football teams can now play games. Before this announcement, they were unable to do so. Only varsity football could play. Now, everybody can.
The freshmen and JV boys teams can begin their first football games on March 18 and their last game has been set for April 26.

Young Coalers ready to compete

In six days the wait will be over for the Coal City boys basketball team.
After a near three-month delay and the uncertainty of even not having a season, the Coalers will take the court for their first game in Streator on Tuesday.
The Coalers will have to fill gaps left by a talented group of seniors who graduated.

Lady Coalers upbeat despite shortened season

It will be a short season but the Coal City girls basketball team intends to make the most of it as they open Monday at Streator.
The alternative could have been having no season at all.
The Lady Coalers welcome two tall post players and a handful of others capable of shooting well from behind the arc.
A year ago Coal City went 6-22 overall and finished seventh in the Illinois Central Eight Conference with a 3-11 mark.

Game times set as schools enter Phase 4

Game times are set for the 2021 basketball season as the Reed-Custer boys will begin their season on Saturday at Herscher while Coal City will be on the road at Streator and Wilmington will be traveling to Lisle on Tuesday. Girls basketball games start Monday as Wilmington girls are hosting Lisle, Reed-Custer girls will travel to Manteno and Coal City girls will host Streator.

Friday Night Lights might shine after all.
The Illinois High School Association announced Friday that high risk sports in some areas have improved from Tier 1 to Phase 4. That gives some teams the go-ahead to start playing games within their region and conference.
Coal City High School is in Region 2 which as of Monday, advanced to Phase 4, giving them the greenlight to start basketball games within their region and conference.

Where Coalers would be without pandemic

If winter sports had started back in November, there’s good reason to believe the Coal City wrestlers right now would be gearing up for regionals and sectionals for a return to the state tournament individually, and as a team. My guess is the boys basketball team would being adjusting to stay competitive while the Lady Coaler basketball team would be better than they were.
