The Coal City wrestlers are regional champions again!
They crowned nine champions Saturday at Wilmington to win their third consecutive title and sixth over the past seven years,
The Coalers racked up 253.5 team points to outdistance second place Reed-Custer (163), Peotone (112) and Wilmington (103.5).
The Coalers had 12 wrestlers punch their tickets to Saturday’s sectional at Chicago (Bowen) with the nine champions and three second places.

The Coal City girls basketball team stayed alive Monday night by beating Wilmington during the opening round of the Reed-Custer Regional. The 50-38 victory comes after losing twice to Wilmington during the regular season.

Bowen Sectional will include 52 state-ranked matmen

The Coalers, Comets and Wildcats venture on the Chicago (Bowen) sectional Friday hoping to place among the top four finishers to advance to state.
Coal City will send 12 wrestlers to sectional, Reed-Custer advances 10 while Wilmington qualified five.
This sectional will be one of the toughest in the state, with 52 state-ranked wrestlers among the 14 weight classes. The top four placers at sectional advance to state which will be Feb. 20-22 in Champaign.

The girls basketball regional starts Monday at Reed-Custer with Coal City, Wilmington, Manteno, Seneca, Beecher and the Lady Comets looking to battle it out in 2A action.
Wilmington (14-11), the #7 seed, will open the regional on Monday at 6 p.m. against Coal City (9th seed).
Of the 12-teams ranked in the sub-sectional, Reed-Custer is highest at #2 of the six teams that will play in Braidwood. Beecher is the next best as the #3 seed.

Coalers stun top-ranked Panthers, pressured by Plano

The Coal City boys basketball team was unable to deal with Plano’s pressure, which eventually led to a 69-62 loss on Friday despite impressive shooting from Austin Pullara’s big performance from behind-the-arc.
“We just rely on long skip passes,” said Coal City coach Glenn Pacek. “And against an athletic team, they’re going to be able to rotate. It’s hard to simulate that pressure in practice.”
Pullara scored 36 points with six threes to lead the Coalers (13-10).

Pullara becomes eighth Coaler to reach 1,000 points

Coal City senior Austin Pullara became the eighth Coal City boys basketball player to join the esteemed 1,000-point club on Tuesday, Jan. 14. Pullara was honored on Friday, Jan. 17 prior to a home game against Reed-Custer.
He was just two points shy of that mark to start the game against Lisle and managed to earn those two points in the first quarter, finishing with 14 points. The guard said coach Glenn Pacek told him at practice and it came as a surprise to him.

Lady Warriors continue impressive run, place third in Bolingbrook Tourney

The eighth grade Coal City volleyball team picked up two wins and a tie during the Bolingbrook Brooks Tournament on Saturday to earn third place.
The Lady Warriors (13-0-1) beat Arlington (25-14, 25-9) and Brooks (25-18, 25-11) with ease and then tied with Troy in their final game, 26-24, 15-25.
In the three games, Aubrey Mellen led them with 34 serving points, seven aces, 17 assists and 16 digs.
Abby Stiles was right behind her with 11 serving points, two aces, four kills, 10 setting assists and 13 digs.

Coalers in driver’s seat for the Regional

With the conference championships decided, the regionals will be the next tournament to come. The regional is set to take place Friday and Saturday, Feb. 7-8 in Wilmington.
The Wilmington Regional will include 12 teams including Reed-Custer, Coal City, Chicago (CICS/Longwood), Chicago (Corliss), Chicago (Fenger), Chicago (Harlan), Chicago (Julian), Crete (Illinois Lutheran), Kankakee (McNamara), Manteno, Peotone and Wilmington.
