CC’s Jezik honored at halftime of Bears game for Week 2 performance

That was Coal City running back Daniel Jezik on the field at halftime of the Chicago Bears’ home game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Jezik was recognized Dec. 22 by the Bears for his performance during in Week 2 of the 2019 season when the Coalers defeated Bishop McNamara 34-20. Jezik rushed 32 times for 297 yards including two key touchdowns that were the difference in the game.

Coaler matmen sweep dual, three straight wins

The Coal City wrestling team proved why they should have the top spot in the Illinois Matmen state rankings on Saturday after getting by Plainfield East, Prairie Central and Bishop McNamara with little problem.
The Coalers (17-2) turned it on against tough Plainfield East, recording 24 points with forfeits to start. After that, they blew past them with three pins, two decisions, a Gabe Ludes technical fall and a Zach Finch major decision.

Coalers fall to Morris in shooting contest, bounce back win over Bulldogs

The Coal City boys basketball team poured it on in the fourth quarter on Friday to top Streator, 69-56.
The Coalers (2-5, 1-3) led the game 31-28 at the half but the Bulldogs came back with a 14-12 third quarter to bring themselves within one.
The Coalers outscored the Bulldogs, 26-14 in the final frame to stave off the comeback.
The Coaler were led by Austin Pullara, who scored 24 points. Jarod Garrelts had 14 points while Cade Mueller had 12 points and Jack Bunton scored another eight.

Unit 1 commended for advanced academic offerings

Gains in advanced placement (AP) access and success have earned the Unit 1 School District and 10 others in the state a spot on the 10th annual AP District Honor Roll.
The College Board named 250 districts across the country to the prestigious Honor Roll this year. Districts on the AP Honor Roll have significantly increased access to AP among historically underrepresented student groups, while maintaining or improving the percentage of students who earned scores of three or higher on AP Exams.

Lady Coalers edge Morris, routed by Peotone

The Coal City girls basketball team was outscored in every quarter during their Illinois Central Eight conference contest with Peotone on Thursday, resulting in a 52-20 loss.
The Lady Coalers (3-8, 1-4) were off their game as the Blue Devils built a 25-11 lead in the first half.
Peotone outscored them 14-9 in the third quarter and then, rattled off 13 unanswered points to finish them off.

The Coal City boys basketball team had a slim lead against a tough Manteno team Friday but couldn’t hold on losing 59-54.
Jack Bunton picked off an errant Manteno pass for starters. He fed the ball to senior Austin Pullara who took it down for two to give Coal City (2-4, 1-3) a 2-0 lead on the fast break.
Then Pullara stole the ball and fed it to Bunton at the basket and he banked it in for a 4-0 lead.

The Coal City wrestling team suffered their second loss of the season during the Downers Grove South dual team tournament where they ended up placing third. Even though the 58-12 loss to Lincoln Way West snapped 13 straight, Coal City has won their last 15 of 17 matches and won’t face the 3A team again. Daniel Jezik turned in a solid performance through it all, earning all-tournament team honors with a 5-0 record on the day.

IHSA votes to leave football playoffs unchanged

Schools in the Illinois High School Association voted Monday to rescind a football district scheduling system that was suppose to start in 2021.
The vote essentially cancels the district scheduling format passed a year ago for the present conference schedule and eight class playoff brackets currently used.

The Coal City girls basketball team was held to single digits in all four quarters by Reed-Custer Monday night, suffering a 45-25 loss.
Reed-Custer held a slim, 10-7 lead but in the second quarter and beyond is when the Comets opened it up.

Coaler matmen gaining steam, win eight straight

The Coalers (9-1) have made it eight straight victories after losing to Joliet Central in the first match of the season.
The Coal City wrestling team blasted Plano, Mendota and Moosehart during their dual team match at Plano High School on Wednesday.
They shutout Plano 80-0 as the Reapers didn’t stand a chance with Coal City’s full lineup. The Coalers tallied 18 points from three forfeits, added nine pins, a Lane Kutemeier decision and a Mike McVay major decision.
