Lady Coalers finish Momence, setting up Herscher Regional semifinal game with Beecher

The Coal City volleyball team continues to take care of business when it matters most, beating Momence 25-8, 25-13 Monday during the first round of the Herscher regional.
The Lady Coalers (18-14) jumped to an early lead and ended up taking both sets by double digits.
The Lady Coalers got a heck of an effort from McKenna Fitzpatrick in the middle as she fired down four kills to lead the team.
Megan Norris and Natalie Durham were right behind her, putting down three kills, apiece.

Jasnosz felt right at home at Augustana College

Coal City defensive end Jacob Jasnosz will switch from wearing green and gold to blue and yellow next fall.
He has signed a letter of intent to play for Augustana College in Rock Island, IL starting in August 2020.
Believe it or not, Jasnosz didn’t start playing football until his freshman year of high school because his parents were worried about concussions. But once he did he loved it and knew it was the sport he wanted to continue.

Coalers look to dominate unknown Firebirds in first round of playoffs

The undefeated Coalers, the #1 seed in Class 4A, may have their easiest opponent yet at 2 p.m. Saturday if (Phoenix-Military Academy) shows up.
It’s one Chicago program depending on the teacher’s strike to be settled by Wednesday so they can get three days of practice in or be forced to forfeit.
If the strike is settled in time, the Coalers (9-0) could roll over the 16th seed team.
Coal City is coming off of a 54-6 win over Reed-Custer where they had over 400 yards offensively.

Superlight Miners will battle Blue Devils in Super Bowl

The Coal City youth football Miners superlights advance to the Super Bowl in Wilmington on Saturday.
The Miner superlights picked up their eighth shutout of the season in a 6-0 win over Bradley to stay undefeated at 9-0. They have scored 140 points while allowing just 18.
Connor Rodriguez plunged into the end zone on a quarterback sneak from a yard out to score their only touchdown.
And the defense played lights out to perserve the win.

Teams hoping teacher strike gets settled on eve of the playoffs

There are 19 Chicago schools listed on the football playoff brackets and the question is will the nine-day Chicago Public Schools’ teacher strike be settled by Wednesday so those teams can play.
IHSA rules require teams to hold three practices on days leading up to their game. That means that by today, (Wednesday) the strike must be settled. As of Tuesday afternoon the CPS and union leaders were still negotiating.

Coal City may not have first round opponent in football playoffs

Unless the Chicago teacher strike is settled before Wednesday, the Coal City football team won't actually have to play to win in the first round of the Class 4A football playoffs.

The game has tentatively be set for 2 p.m. Saturday when the Coalers, the #1 seed, host Chicago Phoenix Military Academy (#16). But Coal City could win by forfeit if the strike is not settled by Wednesday as all Chicago teams must have three days of practice prior to the game. Chicago Phoenix is a 3-4 team, with a week 5 by forfeit, that did not play a full nine-game schedule due to the strike.

Lady Coalers sweep Clifton-Central, will enter Herscher regional

The Lady Coaler kept their win streak alive with a three level sweep of Clifton Central on Monday.
The CC varsity (16-14, 8-5) lost the first volleyball game but didn’t get down, coming back to win the next two, 24-26, 25-18 and 25-18.
The Coalers were led by McKenna Fitzpatrick in the middle as the sophomore hammered eight kills while added three blocks and two service points.
Luci Hakey had five kills, scooped up seven digs and served up seven points from the line.

Coalers can’t let their guard down against the Comets

Rivalries will be renewed as Reed-Custer travels to Coal City Friday to face the undefeated Coalers.
Coal City will be playing for a top seed in the 4A playoffs while the Comets have nothing to lose if they come in playing scrappy.
The Coalers (8-0, 6-0) are one of seven teams still undefeated in Class 4A. They trail Mt. Zion for the number one ranking on the list.

Coaler kickers beat Illinois Lutheran, fall to Peotone in regional

The Coaler soccer team wrapped up its season with a 4-1 loss to top seed Peotone in the regional championship game.
Peotone fired the opening salvo, scoring a goal at 37:30 in the first half to take the lead.
A little over 10 minutes later, the Blue Devils blazed past Coal City’s defense, scoring their second goal of the half and this one was looking like a runaway.

Lady Coaler tennis places fourth in Ottawa Sectional, short of state

The Lady Coaler tennis team did well during the Ottawa Sectional, placing fourth out of eight teams in the contest with 12 points.
Number one singles, Elizabeth Kenney started her run against Claire Vogel of Streator and cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Vogel. She was shutout by Metamora’s Amelia Frieden and that ended her day, 6-0, 6-0.
