Coaler golfers continue strong run

    Coal City traveled to High Point Golf Course in Essex, going head-to-head with Wilmington, coming up with an easy victory, 174-205.
    Cam Lander shot a 41 and medaled for the Coalers. Shooting just outside of Lander was Matt Misewicz who took second place with a 42.
    Cade Mueller continued to stay on track, shooting a 43. Keegan Gagliardo shot a 48, Mickey McDowell ended his day with a 49 and Keegan Johnson had a 55 rounding out a spectacular day for the Coaler golfers.

    The Coal City football team showed character Friday, dominating Herscher during a 28-7 homecoming  win to end Week 3 with a 2-1 record.
    Now the Coalers can’t let up if they want keep their Interstate Eight (Large) Conference record unblemished.
    Their next opponent, Streator, is coming off of a 33-22 loss on the road to Plano.

Coalers shut down the Wildcats

    The Coal City football team had everything working on Saturday, waltzing right onto Jeff Reents Field and waltzing right out with a 27-0 victory over the Wildcats.
    It took two attempts before Coal City and Wilmington could take the field. Storms canceled the contest Friday, but the second time around, on Saturday, not a cloud was in the sky.

    The Coal City soccer team is buzzing, after bouncing back from the shutout against Manteno as they came back to edge out a tight victory over Westmont on Thursday night.
    The halftime score was 0-1 in favor of Westmont. Coal City was down but nowhere near out and it showed in the second half as they mounted a comeback effort.

    Coal City’s football team was tested on Friday, losing a defensive match-up to Morris, 21-7, and the competition won’t be any easier Friday when they travel to Wilmington.
    “We’re not going to dwell on the loss,” said Coaler coach Dan Hutchings. “Hey, we still have eight games left and we have a big test in Wilmington this week. We need to focus on that.

Coal City volleyball team gives Morris a good fight

    On Thursday night, the Lady Coaler volleyball teams lost all three levels to three tough Morris teams.
    The varsity Lady Coalers battled all throughout the first set, taking timeouts when needed and getting that momentum right back, leading for a short period in the set, 16-13. The Morris girls would come back, holding on to the first set.
    Coal City came back in the second set, taking a three-point victory, controlling the net to force a third set.

Coaler tennis team has a .500 week

    After starting off with a bang, beating Rich East, the Lady Coalers got challenged, suffering a 6-1 loss to the Morris Redskins.
    Kiara Abbott was the story of the day on the Coal City side, beating her number one singles opponent, Sophie Mennega, 6-0, 6-0.

Friday night football brought one victory and a pair of losses for three area teams.

Wilmington scored 12 unanswered points in the final quarter to win 39-20 at Manteno; Coal City gave powerhouse Morris a scare until the very end losing 21-7; and Reed-Custer was only one touchdown away in the third quarter before falling to Fieldcrest 34-20.

    The Coal City girls tennis team is back in 2018, looking to fill gaps that senior leaders left while welcoming back lettermen from an outstanding season.
    Matt Leman is back for the sixth year as the head coach He will be assisted by Pam Vigna.
    The Lady Coalers come off of a 14-4 year where everything was clicking, including a first place medal at the Coal City Invite and third place during the Lemont Invitational.

    The Coal City varsity football team are looking to get to the playoffs this year and  may have just enough star power to make that happen.
    “We had a very positive summer,” said head coach Dan Hutchings. “Everyone was in the weight room and showing up for our camps so we had a good summer and look forward to a positive year.”
