Comets nearly upset Lisle, Coalers and Wildcats win

Reed-Custer came close in pulling off the upset of the season, scaring undefeated Lisle in a 24-21 overtime loss.

The Comets owned a 21-7 lead in the fourth against the only team in the Interstate Eight with a perfect record. Reed-Custer got its touchdowns in the air with a pair of passes from quarterback Josh Loomis to AJ Cherry and a third to Nick Mitchell, silencing the Lisle home fans at Benedictine University field Friday.

Joliet Slammers win Fronteir championship

    The Joliet Slammers are the champions of the Frontier league.
    They bested the Washington Wild Things in five games, thanks to early scoring and great pitching.
    They started Nate Antone in Game 5 on Tuesday of last week, who got into trouble within the first couple innings, surrendering two runs on five hits while walking three and striking out four.  

Coalers take charge of the I-8 Large

    The football Coalers are in the driver’s seat of the Interstate Eight Large Conference. They did that by defeating Plano, the only other team without a league loss, 19-14 Friday night.
    “We gutted one out there,” said Coal City coach Dan Hutchings. “That was like one of the bring-your- own-guts games and our kids did. We talked about giving a little effort and play hard and they did. I can’t be any more proud of a group of kids than I am right now.”

Coaler golf place fourth in I-8 Tournament, preparing for Pontiac Regional next week

    The Coaler golf team finished fourth in the I-8 Conference meet held Monday at the Wolf Creek Golf Course.
    Lisle (352) and Westmont (355) were the two teams to finish above the Coalers. Coal City was third with a 360 total.
    Top indiviual golfers for the Coalers were Tyler Johnson, who led the team with an 84, Matt Misewicz carded a 90, Cam Lander scored a 92 while Cade Mueller turned in a 94 to round out the top four golfers for Coal City.

Coaler soccer continues to win, two in week

    The Coaler kickers fell to 12-5 after the loss to Momence in a nail biting soccer match on Monday night, 2-1.
    Sean McGouirk scored the lone goal for the Coalers as they were unable to generate much scoring support.
    They will host Clifton Central tomorrow. Game time is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

    The Coal City soccer team  beat Sandwich  on Thursday.
    Gavyn Williams led the way for the Coalers, scoring two goals to get their offense jump started.

Coaler defense leashes the Bulldogs in shutout

    If the best offense is a good defense the Coal City football team lived up to that mantra Friday at Streator with a 15-0 shutout victory over the Bulldogs.
    The defense silenced the hosts while the Coaler offense stepped up to fill the void left with Connor Skubic’s absence.

Lady Coalers remain perfect in I-8 hunt

    The Lady Coaler volleyball team completed the sweep of Streator on Thursday, improving to 11-5 and 4-0 in conference.
    The varsity girls got the big victory in the first set and then just edged out a close one in the second set to put this one in the win column, 25-12, 25-23.
    Blaire Harseim led the way at the net, drilling five kills while also adding two service points.
    Megan Norris was number two in kills with three while also having one solo block and four service points.

'Cats, Coalers win, Comets clipped

Wilmington's varsity football team avoided a three-peat of losses Friday night, scoring 27 second-half points to defeat Sandwich 41-19.

The Wildcats (2-2) racked up 449 yards of total offense, double the output by the hosting Indians, as three of their six touchdowns were runs or 27 yards or more, a sign that Wilmington may be playing more characteristic football with break-away gains.

    On Monday, Coal City battled with Morris, coming out on top in a close game, 4-2.
    Austin Planeta and Gavyn Williams each scored two goals to provide the much needed firepower.
    They took the feed from Collin Meece, Sean McGouirk, Nick Sullivan and Williams, who all provided assists.
    Ben Hawkins saved five goal attempts to give them the effort they needed.
